Evasive maneuvers and trash bags
#1

While driving the 968 yesterday on the highway, on a very light traffic day, an empty trash bag floating around two lanes with the aid of a slight breeze suddenly shifted right in front of me as I was maybe two car lengths from running it over.  With eyes in the rear view and side view mirrors I realized I have plenty of space for an emergency maneuver, which is exactly what I did.  Yanked the car at the last second into the adjacent lane, and then promptly retuned to mine, continuing on at a mild mannered 70 mph, or so..

A car which was approaching in the fast lane, eventually caught up to me in about 5 seconds ( but he was close enough behind me to witness the drastic evasive maneuver  Wink  ) and the driver looked at me with a huge snarky smile on his face and shaking his head as if to say : what the heck are you afraid of  ?!  It’s an empty trash bag !  Yes, I read his mind  :glare: .   I should have asked him to pull over so I can educate him what you have to deal with when plastic bags are sucked under your car and invariably sear themselves onto your hot exhaust pipes, muffler, etc .  Obviously he never experienced that misery ; long lasting stench and a herculean effort to scrape and clean that melted plastic off from under your car, especially when you don’t have a hoist . Had that happen to me four or five times, and not something I care to deal with again.

I failed to execute a defensive maneuver while driving the 968 at a suitably high rate speed. Pressure washing did no good at all, so I bought a five gallon can of tomato juice and put that into soap tank on the pressure washer and then pressure washed the front end of the car and the entire underside. It worked really well.

How did you even think of using tomato juice ?!    The only non-edible use I’ve heard for it, is to get out skunk spray smell out of pets fur, or backyard furniture ..

Is their a chemical composition there that works this magic? Doesn’t it attract bugs?

RAP, as it turns out the use of tomato juice to neutralize skunk odor is not ver effective on pets, so I'm not sure why it worked on the car. Skunk spray is made up of a mix of chemicals called thiols because they are sulfur based. The most effect remedy for de-skunking yourself or a pet is a mixture of warm water Dawn dish detergent and hydrogen peroxide. The dish soap emulsifies the oil in the skunk spray and the peroxide chemically destroys the thiol.

That’s good to know, my friend whose digs got sprayed by skunks several times has always used tomato juice, I’ll let him know there is a more effective solution .   And the dog won’t look like Clifford afterwards  Tongue

Tomatoes are mildly acidic.

Inkedupfatboy, you are correct the mild acidity will alter the chemistry of thiols and reduce the odor, but it doesn't oxidize them which the peroxide will do. Part of the reason tomatoes juice is less effective is that it does nothing to neutralize the oiliness of skunk spray. As long as there is some residual oiliness of the skunk present on what was sprayed to odor will remain.

Oxyclean will kill skunk orders but I would not apply not to a pet.
