Travel advice to the promised land - and back
#1

My son and I are going on a pilgrimage to the 968 SC Mecca in May. I have picked a Super 8 motel in Redding for the first stop, the motel with the least amount of complaints We are spending a day installing the SC and one free day afterwards in Long Beach with our friends. The trip back will be the coast road through CA/OR and cut over to I5 before WA. I assume there are good points to get onto 1/101 and off. I plan on taking 3-4 days to enjoy the drive back and enjoy the SC with all that fresh sea air! Does anyone have suggestions for routes and conversely places/routes to avoid. Even more importantly nice, safe Porsche places to overnight in?

Make sure you check with the Highway Patrol about Highway 1 near Big Sur. There was a big landslide last week that took out about 40 ft. of road. Initial reports were that it may be closed for months.

Tks for the heads up on the motel. I guess it's back to Google to pick a lesser evil

Tks Bill, I have M+S tires so no problem I'll check on my way back to see if I have to avoid that chunk.

no worries - i'm usually fine with a bed anywhere, as long as i don't have to share it with bugs, and it's flat - i mean, it's only one night, right? there have been a few that are just horrendous though - that particular one was pretty dicey, but it's not the worst i've stayed in - my wife on the other hand..................

watch it when going through Weed, which is fairly close to there - the CHP patrols that area very heavily and is merciless - i picked up a souvenir certificate when going through there myself - not fun - every time i go through there i see people pulled over or the CHP waiting to nail them - radar detector is highly recommended

The 101 between L.A. and the Bay area is highly recommended over the 5. It's slower, but passes through much much nicer scenery. Highway 1 between San Louis Obispo and Santa Cruz is even slower, but even more fabulous - with much tight twisty-road goodness to exercise a boosted 968 - but Flash is right, there may be a section out due to landslide. Check Caltrans first, and have a great drive!

The section of 101 from Paso Robles north to King City is also heavily patrolled. You can always cut over to CA HWY 25. A lesser travelled route than 101 and takes you through the Chalone Wine Growing District. When you get north of SF on 101 you will be passing through the Sonoma wine growing area. A nice ride once you get north of Santa Rosa but also heavily patrolled.

Tks to everyone so far. I have the fairly good detector, it's a must when passing through Oregon I got a ticket there almost 30 years ago, came home and never paid it. I was in my early 20's and didn't take much stock in those things at the time. Pre-computer era so I'm pretty sure they have forgotten about me by now

Take as much of PCH as you can. Probably one of the best drives in a sports car, in the world. Really, one of the best drives regardless what your actually driving. Twisty, and time consuming tho. Id personally drive the coast instead of the 5 though. Trinity is nice, but Humboldt, and Mendocino are more scenic IMO. take the 1/PCH, and 101 as much as possible for the eye candy. FYI most hotels in Norcal arent very nice.

Thanks. I was just reading in the new Panorama that the piece of highway leading to Santa Barbara was pretty crappy concrete. Maybe I5 it to 166 and cut over to 101?

Yeah, the roads on that stretch arent the greatest. Probably wouldnt hurt to cut around the city north of SB.

This song was just too fitting for this thread.

I drove up to Santa Barbara from Orange County a few weeks ago (not in the 968 tho). All the recent rain we've had has opened up some nasty holes in the pavement just north of Ventura, where the 101 goes right along the ocean. Other than that stretch, all was ok. Holes might even be repaired by now.
