Engine Oil Light
#1

Yesterday the engine oil light came on indicating the oil level was a little low. Seems to come on at about 1/4 above the minimum line on the dipstick. Added oil up to just under the the max line and the light has continued to stay on. It has gotten stuck on after filling a few times in the past, but usually turns off after sitting and restarting. This is the first time it has continued to stay on. Oil pressure, etc is all normal and the car is running fine.

I am guessing the the oil level sender is the problem. Has anyone had this item go bad, know where it's located and had to change it? Or is there another possible culprit? Any advice is appreciated.

I (that is, Porsche dealer) looked at mine recently. Light would come on too frequently when the level was down only marginally. Problem was solved. Also note that the wires to it can become brittle and loose connection - i would check those first. I think that it is the sensor immediately behind the DME temp sensor on the front of the engine on the driver's side. There are two wires that feed it and they can become brittle. My connector had failed and some spade connectors were made to fit. No problems since.

I've had the same problem a couple of times. First time it was the wires, and the second time it was the unit.

I had the same issue. In my case it was the unit.

You need to drain the oil, take off the protective heat sheilding, disconnect the wires, take out the 3 allen bolts pull the unit out and rotate it 90 degrees to get the float portion out of the oil pan. It is a bit of a tight fit. You could tell mine was bad, because it seemed to just stay stuck at the top and would settle back down. Easy fix.
