The New Garage is Starting to Come Together
#1

Two days of building and hanging sharp-edged sheet metal cabinets, but the new place is starting to come together. Now I need to back the car up 2-3 feet and I'll have a place to work again!

Looking good Tama! My dream is to one day have a full stocked garage, with 4 post lift and all the tools one might need. I've made good progress on the tools, but lack the "garage" part. So far all I have is a car port with a concrete floor (had that poured last year).

Tama, slowly looking good. Nothing like a well sorted garage. I got two tire racks to hang for xmass. Man they take a lot of space!

Thank you mbardeen.

Rap, Tire racks? What do they look like? I have at least one set of wheels/tires I want to get out of the way.

Here's the other corner of the garage, also slowly coming together.

How do you like the Lowes cabinets? I do like the look, but I ended up with the gladiator cabinets.

Do those cabinets have wheels on them? Any chance of a full pic of your garage?

pmason, I do like the cabinets overall, but I think all of the cabinet systems are overpriced for what is basically very thin stamped steel panels. It was frustratingly packed (lots of bent pieces and the parts were jammed inside each other so it took a long time to get them separated. They keep all of the display cabinets in the stores locked, and/or they are way up out of reach so I spent a month trying unsuccessfully to compare the Kobalt, Gladiator, NewAge / Coleman and other styles before finally throwing my hands up and going with the Kobalt stuff. In my area, the Gladiator stuff is available at more than just Lowes (Sears for instance), and it goes on clearance more often if I had to guess, but I wanted cabinets now (and didn't want to wait for onesy-twosey sale items) and there is much more of it in stock at the Lowes than any other brand.

Rap, my garage floor has a drain slot running the entire width of it, so it's fairly well sloped from where the front of the car would be back to about the midway point in the floor, then it slopes back up to the entrance. For that reason, I didn't opt for the casters, and used the adjustable legs instead. I do need stuff for the walls, but I have to sort through all my #$%! and figure out what's going where before I start hanging things. There are also a ton of holes in the walls from the previous owner's hooks that I want to repair properly before I throw my stuff up there.

Any garage I had before ended up looking like crap, and I'm hoping I can keep this one looking fairly well sorted if I have enough cabinets to keep stuff out of sight. I don't want to just peg things to the walls or use open shelves if I can avoid it.

This many cabinets was about $1500 so far, which I don't think was too bad, all things considered. I did *not* opt for the "work surfaces", which are basically MDF (beaver puke) pieces that fit on the base cabinets. I can make something better than that, for a lot less money.

Makes sense. Based on previous experience, I assume you have another work area? It's interesting how a garage and work area can slowly come together!

No, I lost my large heated workshop at ground level, and now I have a basement with no exterior access and a very small "3-car" garage that won't fit 3 cars. Hell, my truck won't even fit (it's 19.5 feet long and the garage is 20).

I have to have a bunch of electrical work done to add a sub-panel and 220V in the garage and basement to run the lift, table saw and planer, and I have to build non-load-bearing walls to contain all of the dust because now I have to do my carving and woodworking in a house that uses blown air for heat.

But my wife has a fetching sunroom...

Looking good and has me motivated to get going on mine!

I finished the kitchen and office / game-room renovations over the past few weeks. The TV room is next, then the master bathroom, on-suite bathroom and the main level bathroom; after which will come the garage! Should get around to that sometime in March...

Rap, yes we sold the house with the beautiful view and large workshop to purchase a much more modern home next to a cemetery. We moved a grand total of 7.9 miles. I get the logic and I like the house, but the lack of woodworking and garage spaces is killing me. And I miss the view. We are closer to everything though, which is also key.

Langley, it would take me longer than March to do all those rooms. I have a Dining Room, Office, and Kitchen and Master Suite to renovate, but I need the woodworking space set up first.

"to purchase a much more modern home next to a cemetery" - lol - that way, when you're done fixing things up, it's a shorter haul for the wife to bury you

re: cabinets - everybody knows that my garage mahal has gone through a few revisions over the years this last round, i went with stack-on, because they fit together a bit better than the rest. i like them, but they are also thin steel, and the shelving can't handle a lot of weight. i'll probably leave them here when we leave though, and go for built in stuff in the new place. however, i will NOT be going with particle board cabinets. been there done that. they fall apart way too easily, and the shelves sag pretty quickly with weight. the cabinets will be plywood, with reinforced shelving. the doors will be coated for ease of keeping them clean. the counter tops will be stainless steel.

very happy with the floor though. definitely better than just epoxy.

Supposedly this is real but I'm skeptical and think it's a " videoshopped " fake. Nice man cave garage, even if it's just a concept, but if it's real - oof ! http://youtu.be/f9woTvsU0sk
