Son #1 turns 18 this year, and though he is very easy going, he has decided that at some point he will actually need to learn how to drive. The family has had 5 different cars in the past 6 months and he had driven 3 up till yesterday. You guessed it.



After picking up his permit from our wonderful DMV he and I headed out for a little lesson in how to stall a car and burn a clutch - in the 968. I thought his jaw would stick in the open position when I stopped the car and told him to get behind the wheel.



After about 20 minutes of very slow <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> , but very torqey <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> motoring, he had a smile big as all outdoors.



He thought he wanted a late model Civic hatch auto. Might just be looking for a 944..... instead.



Great little road in SoCal if anyone is in the area.

This reminds me of the time I took my then 13 year old son to a community college parking lot and said, "wanna drive?" It was a GMC Yukon at the time, but a Ferrari to him.

For local 944 involvement, you might want to get in touch with Tim Comeaux who does 944 racing things: http://www.comeauracing.com/. He builds and rents 944 for autocross / time trial track events. Great guy, he and a few others have a 944 group the meet every month, am sure they'd welcome 968 involvement as well. Not sure how much 968 stuff he does, but he and his helper were pretty interested in mine. (Sorry to all if this is 944 oriented, tried to tie it into racing and 968s as well <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

Agreed. I tried to pass it off on Roland but he is too smart for me. I want to check out some additional roads so that we are not driving by a waiting trooper on lap 3 of the Ring. Maybe this fall.



We are pretty far South so it would be a smaller draw from mid and up state. Of course its only 5 hours from PHX Tom <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I was at a father's day party with my son, 15 at the time and not a legal driver yet. He hit me up (wisely after I had consumed a couple of beers) to take my 968 out in the neighborhood with his friend. I said, OK, stay in the neighborhood, and be careful. They did come back with no car damage, but 90 minutes later, and down about a quarter tank. I'm guessing the locals were quite curious about seeing the same car making lap after lap past their homes. Or they made a quick trip to Flagstaff. Some day when I'm an old man he will probably tell me.

Took me over 40 years to catch on to fast cars. I had some fast boats prior to that and so always needed the truck to haul them.



I suppose that if my Dad were a car nut and I got started earlier, I'd still be driving a Porsche - just maybe not my first.

My son definitely caught it from me. He (and the entire family) will always remember that, when I asked my wife to marry me, I told her I couldn't afford to purchase an engagement ring because I had to buy a Corvette. In the last three years, my son has owned (not in sequence) an SLK350, a BoxsterS, a 997, one or two others that I forget, and then the Maserati Spyder. Now he's adding, instead of replacing, with the Quattroporte.

I offered my son ( he just started driving a few months ago ) the MBZ but he said that it's "way too nice" and that he would be very apprehensive driving it, worrying all the time that he will damage the car in an accident. The MBZ is in showroom condition, so to some teenagers I suppose that can be a bit intimidating. Nonetheless, a noble statement from a 17 year old, but I have to wonder if it's his confidence ( or lack thereof ) that's at play here, or if he actually intends to drive the car like a maniac so he wants something he can trash around <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> And no, he's not touching the 968, even if he wanted to .



I searched briefly for a 944 for him, but everything available nearby was in absolutely horrible shape, and since we were in a hurry to get him the car, we bought him an '02 Altima. Decent shape, clearly much more reliable than any Porsche would be, and surprisingly, he's very content with it .



At his age I was driving a Maserati Merak ( it was not in the greatest shape, but still... it certainly was no "Nissan Altima " <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ) So since he did not get either the need for speed or vehicle aesthetics standards from me, I am becoming very suspicious and will have a serious discussion with my wife about this; will also be taking a closer look at our mailman, pizza or UPS delivery guy for any resemblence to our son <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

The timing of this thread is too funny. My son turns 13 in a couple of weeks and I've already been thinking of cars for him. I'm sure as heck not going to give him the keys to my 968 or my Mustang GT. If we keep what we have now, which is likely, he'll have to drive the Acura MDX or we'll have to find something else.



I've seriously been thinking about finding and old 914 but a 944 isn't out of the question.
