Dreaded Check Engine Light

I was cruising home from a golf outing and noticed the "check engine" light was on.I pulled over and shut it off hoping the light would not come back on but it did on restart.The car was (is) running great.All other gauges are normal.It just turned 90,000 but has had recent service.I will drop it off tues. at the P-shop but anyone with any experiences with this malfunction?

A lit Check Engine light normally sets a code.

Turn the key on (not run), step the gas pedal to the floor and hold it there till the light flashes a couple times then let it up about 1/4 and start counting the blinks. The codes are all on line (just search for them) and the code retrieval procedure is in the workshop manual

Got the 68 out of the shop.Code indicated 02 sensor but since it was running good they just turned the warning off.Charged me nothing.

Well that was cool of them!!

I would start saving for the O2 sensor (not that they are crazy expensive), if it set a code once it will do it again; a failing O2 will also affect you MPG (with the cost of fuel now who wants that <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ). There has been lost of talk about using other than stock sensors. Some say it's bad, some say it's fine, when I was an auto tech we used after market sensors all the time and never once did they cause any problems, in fact allot of times I would order the direct replacement after market part number only to be sent a universal one (no problem).

Just make sure you get the right kind (heated vs. non-heated). If it's one wire it’s non-heated. 968s are heated, this gets the sensor working sooner for better emissions (have you hugged a tree today? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

Yeah, I take my all my autos(Porsche,MercBenz,VW Passat,Nissan Maxima) to Westport Autohouse in St.Louis.After 4 944's and now this unit,we have become personal friends so they cut me a break on the little stuff.They know they will get it back eventually.With that many cars,one of them is in their shop all the time.

Hi guys!



Don't know if this is the best thread for my question, but it seems a bit related. Anyway, I just bought and installed a ProMax 7100 chip (american version as I have an imported US car) and also did the airbox mod. Now the Check Engine light is lit all the time and it worries me a bit (the car seems to be running great though). I've heard that this could be the case if you use a ROW chip in a US car, but if the chip isn't incorrectly labeled it should be correct. Is this a problem with the chip or could this be a real error?



How do I read the fault code btw. I think it's a bit tricky to know where to code begins (the seem to be codes that are for example 1-1-1-4 and also 1-1-4-1, so it is possible to read then wrongly). One of the blinks seem to be longer than the other one, is this the first one in the code?

Start by putting the original chip back in, if the light stays out then you know it’s an issue with the chip, if not then at least you eliminated that possible cause. As for reading codes there have been allot of talk on this, if you do a search for fault codes you should find what you need.
