Does anyone have a 968 Shop Manual on disc?
#1

I have AOL, and can not download anything larger than a postage stamp. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Anyone have a 968 Shop Manual on disc, or point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

George B., from 944 Ecology, is sending me one. When I get it I'll let

you know the cost.

If you don't already know, George is extremely knowledgable about

these cars, and specializes in the 944's. Since the cars are so similar,

and share parts and components, he is a good resource to tap.

The shop manual came in the mail yesterday, on disc.

By the way, do you every drive your 968 with the belt

cover off?

Scott I have not driven my 968 with the belt cover off but have a friend who uses his on the racetrack only and he has removed the cover as well as the balance shafts and belt. Noticeably rougher at idle but not noticeable once the revs are up. good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Hey Bob-

I wonder how the engine doesn't bounce right through the hood, without

the balance shafts. Does he get more power with the shafts hooked up?

I think I paid Mitsubishi (through Porsche) about $8 for those

things! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

The thing about that darn cover is that it is preventing me from seeing

that potential problem that could be the coda for my motor. But I

don't want one of my long haired friends to get pulled into the gears

when he leans into the front to admire the machine, realizing too late

that the cover is gone! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I know a real expert who never drives his 944 with either the cover or

the belly pan. He says he has never, never had a problem. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

What do you think about that? I am tempted to take my cover off and leave

if off, so I can always see what is going on down there, but

want to get some sort of consensus from those with more 968 experience.

Thanks for sharing.

just for the purpose of cleanliness, i'd leave the cover on - enough crap gets in there now as it is

as for the belly pan, it doesn't cause a "problem" per se, but having it does help with cooling, downforce, and aerodynamics - ever take a look at any of the exotic high speed cars? dead flat under there

There's been much discussion of this over the 944, and it's generallly regarded as a bad idea -- but no reported actual failure. There's not that much benefit to it -- it saves you from removing maybe 6 bolts? Plus, you shouldn't push your car to the point where you can visually notice wear and tear on the belts -- that is a belt that should have been replaced long time ago. I guess, some people thinks it looks cool.

I've also seen alot of crap (salt maybe?) end up on the cover on my 944 after one New England weather. I'd hate to be putting all that crap directly on the motor.

Good point. But when you remove the cover, don't you have to tangle

with the p/s and alt belts? Or are you just pulling the cover back for a look,

and screwing it right back on? My furthest concern is that is might

look cool. For me, it's all about ease of inspection. When you pull that

itsy bitsy rubber tab that covers up the view window to inspect the t belt,

you get to see about one half inch of the belt, and nothing else. Call me

paranoid, but I don't feel that it gives me enought info on the know weak

point in the car.

Should be no problem with posting the link. Think of it like this, it's illegal for a teenager to drink alcohol in the US, but it's not illegal to tell them where the liquor store is. What they do at said store is there responsibility.

actually, yes, it is, though you would be hard pressed to find a DA that would press the charges - the charges could be aiding and abetting the illegal distribution of alcohol to minors, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, conspiracy to commit fraud (since you knew they were a minor, and any reasonable person would know they intended to buy alcohol illegally) - depends on the circumstances, and how pissed off the DA is

we have to be very careful of suborning copyright infringement - for that reason, we cannot post other people's copywritten material without permission, nor can we post links to those who do - with stuff like that, the rule of thumb is that if it is still for sale, we can't do it without permission

sorry guys

the minute i find out they have permission to do that, we can post the link - i would love to have that up there - eric used to have the manual on the site, but had to take it down

flash is right. As an IT administrator the owner/operator of any electronic medium such as an FTP site, bulletin board etc. can be held liable for providing access to CR materials. That's why I posted a link that requires you to purchase the manual legitimately what's 20.00! That being said, I doubt the manual provider sends Porsche a royalty fee! But at least I have transferred ownership of the content responsibility to tradebit.com.

yup - it's the same thing with magazine articles - we all know that people distribute them over the net - we also know that generally speaking nobody does anything about it - however, i sure don't want to be the one who gets nailed

i've had to pull a number of things from the site for that reason - as soon as i become aware of something, i take care of it

now, stuff that somebody owns, and posts here is fine - by posting it here, we are granted the rights as well

so, if somebody wants to convince porsche to post it here, please feel free

if they discontinue selling it, we have a good shot too

i will be looking into making a download for fee arrangement with them, just as i am planning on doing with some other publications

On ebay there is a store called SHOP-FSM that sells the manual and maybe all the manuals for other models on a CD. It cost with shipping from Canada about $20.00 I then took it to FedEx Office and had them print it back to back, punch 3 holes in the paper $65 and bought a 2 inch binder at Office Depot $8.00 so the total was about $105
