Dead cig lighter

No, I am not picking up smoking. I want to power my camcorder, and the lighter socket seems to be dead. I guess it always was, cause the lighter never worked. I just didn't realize it was the socket before. All other electric stuff works; outside temp, clock etc.



Is this a common problem? My first guess would be the wiring behind the dash. Is this a pain to access? Is it possible to replace the socket from the outside?



I've bought a really nice car camera mount, but I don't like running the camcorder on batteries.

Check the fuse first. I've seen that fuse blow for some reason when using the air pump with the car not running. Not sure what else that fuse powers, so might not be that if you have power to the temp gauge, etc.

What makes the wiring a pain in the neck is that, when you remove the dash trim piece that the lighter is mounted in, the rubber tube that connects to the little grille will almost undoubtedly come off. The only way I found to get that tube back on is after the trim piece is reinstalled - and the only access I found is to remove the glove box. All in all, not a terribly difficult job, but a few more steps than you might think should be necessary. Here's hoping it's the fuse.

Uh-oh... I'm still trying to forget the time I replaced my glove box lock, but that crack in the trim piece keeps reminding me. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



I said I'd never go there again, but if I have to, I'm going to need detailed instructions, and a replacement trim piece while I'm at it.



I'm almost certain it's the same fuse as the temp gauge. Isn't it?

I'm not anyplace where I can check what fuses do what - but, if you need to do the dismantling, I can provide pretty good instructions. Let's see how this unfolds.

Just went out and checked (good excuse for some fresh air) and it is indeed the same fuse as the temp gauge, as well as the clock and door gong, so it looks like you may have a wiring issue. Good luck.

If that fuse blows, your temp gauge will still work. However, if it is blown, the temp gauge always resets to celsius scale, even if you left it on fahrenheit when you turned off the car.

Ahhh....I thought I remembered something weird about that. On the fuse box it is marked as sharing the same fuse.....strange.
