dashboard trim kit
#1

So I'm planning to order the "peel-off / stick on" dark burlwood trim for the dash, shifter plate, doors, etc.. Effortless application, but my question is: if I get tired of this look a year from now and want to take it off, will that be easy to remove and clean the underlying stock trim to where you can't tell anything was there, or does it pretty much ruin the current trim, or leave some discoloration, etc.. no matter how much goo-gone you use to dissolve that adhesive tape ?

I'm waiting for an answer also, I've been considering buying the same.

It would depend on what product they use as the adhesive tape. If they use 3M VHB tape, it is permanent, no going back with that stuff. Shoot them an e-mail with that question.

I thought I would like one of these kits...until I saw one installed. I'd suggest a look at an installation (perhaps one that has been around the block a few times) before you jump in. my $0.02 worth.

Gene,

I did see it "live" on a 968 on Saturday and really liked it.. not sure how long it's been in the car though..and how it stands the test of time... for $ 150 however,

I have no problems taking a chance.. if I don't like it , it goes into storage, next to a few other accessories about which I changed my mind..

I already ordered it, btw.

Dave,

Yikes - permanent ?! Like in.. superglue ? I'll definitely have to check into that. Not sure what the alternative is - maybe buy the 3M "light" version of that tape ( the type with which emblems, or mouldings are attached to the car's body )

and use it instead - it's so ultra-thin, I don't think there would be a noticeable

" applied over " look to the trim, any more than it is now..

I think I have a picture in my profile of a light burlwood dash kit, but I can't get in to see. It keeps asking for some type of installer program that is appently no longer on my computer!

Dan, The car I saw was a beater that was in SoCal. The kit looked "stuck on" in a bad way.

I'll take photos and post when I get it - it will take about 10 - 15 days because they did not have it in stock. This dark burlwood ( according to them ) is more of a medium tint - sort of a cognac color, which is a shade I would prefer anyway... as opposed to the very dark burlwood which they claimed is ALMOST " black ".

before I permanently install it, I'll use some weak adhesive at a few key spots and mount it just to see if it has that stuck-on look.. anything not resembling a factory inlaid wood look... and it's not getting installed

Gene, was it a cab by any chance ? I'm thinking if the car has the top down often, if it's parked outside in the hot SoCal sun, it may not take long for the application to start looking shabby. Even a coupe if you don't use sunshield for the dash, probably ( eventually ) reaches that same worn look and starts to detach slowly..

Check out http://jageng.com/ they have some nice stuff. I had their Alum. dial rings in my 968 the quality was excellent. Custom made. I would give them a call before you do anything.

I got this via email (still on their email list) full trim package or just a single piece, it doesn't matter...all 944 trim pieces are 15% off.

A perfect time to change the interior of your car to warm woods or sporty aluminum.

I've had mine on for 2+ years and no fading or discoloration. It's the plastic version. Not sure if you are have the real wood or plastic. I really like the looks with the tan/black/Aventurine combo. Had a lot of complements. No plans of taking it off. It's the rosewood version. It's a coupe so the direct sunlight is minimal. I do use a sun shade in the summer. Just need to take your time when installing as once the sticky comes in contact it STICKS. I put it in place with the tape to get an idea of how it fits. Buona Fortuna.

is your interior black/ cashmere deviating? mine is, and has the black dash, door tops, and carpet, with everything else being cashmere - if yours is the same, i'd love to see a shot

Im on my 2nd kit now and it is about 1.5 year old. Its still looks as good as the day that i got it. My first kit was on a 951 and right before I sold the car, I took the kit off and recycled it on my first 968 cab. No problem taking it off and there were no damage at all on the 951. To take off the kit, you can use a heat gun or hair dryer to peel it off.

Dan, when installing your new kit, make sure you use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface or give me a call and I'll help you with the install.

cosimo,

I ordered the synthetic ( "plastic" ) - several friends who have genuine wood trims indicated that it has to be maintained / treated constantly, or it'll start looking crappy fairly soon.

ron,

thanks - good to hear about the no-damage removal.

send me a PM with your phone, I may very well need to take you up on the offer

for a tutorial while installing..

Flash, I assume you were addressing me. Based on the article in 9 Magazine my interior is the same as yours without the bikini clad models. Cashmere I guess is the color although I have heard it called champagne. I will try and get some pictures. I have a digital camera but not sure how to post here.

cashmere, champagne... it's all good stuff - I'm envisioning Diane Lane or Daisy Fuentes ( Jessica Alba is too young ) wearing a cashmere sweater ( and ONLY a cashmere sweater ), sipping a glass of champagne.. wait, is this going off topic ?!

I was thinking of Jessica in a cashmere bikini in the Recaro next to me. Now that's what I call dash enhancement.

I just ordered some samples from them. Has any one tried the carbon fiber? I have a cobalt blue/ light gray interior. Its hard to decide on what color to get.

It arrived, it's in place, it looks good...BUT...the cut-outs leave a tiny bit more room around some areas of the instruments panel and the knobs than I would have liked. I did not take a photo yet ( may be will do that tomorrow). The spaces I'm talking about would not show up on the picture anyway- it's probably less than a mm, yet still enough to bug me just a little. My MBZ dash trim fits all the way under the knobs and switches, so it has far less of that "applied on" appearance to it. Of course it had to be done that way on the 968 in order to accomodate the numerals around some of the knobs but that, coupled with the cut outs around the "phantom switces" where only the black plastic shows trough, are details that stand out a bit too much. As does the clock area now ( I'm going to contact them to see if I can get a spare piece of the material to fill in that area and the missing switches spaces )

Maybe it's one of those things you just get used to I suppose...
