Cut down shift lever
#1

Has anyone cut down their shift lever? I was thinking I would like to have the shift lever closer to the steering wheel and besides, it is kind of tall. I like to have the shifter very clsoe to the steering wheel, when I am on the track. Can you cut it down and will the shift rod accept other shifters, like Momo or Sparco for instance?

Thanks in advance.

I cut mine and used the standard MOMO adapter on the lever.

be very careful how much you cut it - a little goes a long way - think leverage and fulcrum - i'd do it a little at a time (maybe 1/4" increments)

oof - that's huge - because i have a short shift kit in mine, there is no way i could go that far and have any chance of smooth shifting - i think maybe 1/2" is going to be my limit

i have driven a car with a shift that was cut a lot, and i thought it was too clunky for smooth shifts - you really had to manhandle the shifter - i don't like a sloppy shifter, but that was more than for my tastes

i'd still do it a bit at a time - no going back once it's cut

I am going to trim 3/4 off this week. Sometimes I feel I am shifting a school bus lever.

Xrad, I am with you on that. I will start at 1/2" and work from there. Any suggestions as to the shift lever? I think a chrome ball works best. Maybe a Momo or Sparco.

Its been a long time since I thought about a school bus from the inside. Thanks for the memory. I agree that the shift lever is too long, and I asked about this in April. After driving it for a while I have gotten used to it and kindof like the way it feels. I tend to grab the bar rather than the handle for easy, going to the market shifts, but the long lever really lets me know I hit the right gate when I am up on the wheel.

I have the aluminum MOMO "ball" forget the actual name.

Anyhow, it get hot as F*&K! in the summer and very cold in the winter.

I am eventully going to get the same knob in leather.

If you do not like the modified shift lever, they are only like $40 new. Not that big of a deal to go back to stock. I have an extra lever if someone wants it.

yeah, heat shoots right up the tunnel into the shift rubber boot when moving. I zip stripped my rubber boot under the leather and things cooled down a 'little'..

I did that with the old 944. Don't remember exactly how much I cut but it was a lot !! The shifter ended up looking like the one in an Lotus Esprit; essentially a knob and no visible shaft ( ok, no jokes please ). No problems shifting whatsoever but, IIRC, it got pretty friggin' noisy and the vibration was far more pronounced.

Not sure I want to experiment with the 968, though I also dislike the school bus shifter look ..

I took off ~1.5" from the shifter height and threw on a light weight wood momo shifter. I also have the 944racing transaxle shift linkage. I LOVE the way it feels. A little notchy for Bob, but I enjoy a very precise shift pattern. I can feel everything. Much better than the sloppy "bus" stock setup. The only downside is that since the shifter is so light, it vibrates much more than the two ton stock shifter. One of the best mods I've done on my car to date.

Here is another alternative, shorter throw and accepts after market shift knobs.
