CS Steering Wheels Pics
#21

I read a similar report about anti-lock brakes not materially affecting mortality rates in cars comparted to those without them.

As regards air-bags, its a bit more complicated. It does seem newer air-bags do improve your changes, especially side curtain airbags (if you get t-boned).

See http://www.iihs.org/research/topics/airbags.html

Interesting stuff. The gist seems to be that newer airbags, and particularly the addition of side and side curtain airbags, really have reduced fatalaties. For older airbags, such as the ones in out cars, the conclusion is less clear. Looks kind of like a wash to me. As long as you ALWAYS buckle your seatbelt, it doesn't appear that replacing you steering wheel with one without an airbags significantly increases your risk of death or serious injury in a 968.

Would elimination of the steering wheel air bag affect insurance coverage?

Only at time of purchase here in MD. The inspection done when you register will note if it has airbags or not. If you change out later they wouldnt know and your not obligated to report it.

technically, every time you renew your insurance, you are supposed to report changes to anything of which you informed them at the time of purchasing the policy, as it changes the rating

look at it this way, if you told them you had an airbag, then you removed it, then you got in an accident and sustained an injury, they could legally deny the claim if they could show that you might not have been injured if you had the airbag

do you want to match lawyers with them, or risk end up paying for the hospital bill?

personally, i hate arguing with the insurance companies, and having done it enough, have found it much better just to claim everything as is, and not play "hide the ball" or try to "get over" on them

So what are other steering wheel choices that employ current generation airbags that maybe used besides the one already shown in this thread? Any others?

Boxter, 996. They take a little modifying, but I believe they can be made to work.

Boxster (986) 3 and 4 spoke wheels can be modified to fit.

996 3 and 4 spoke wheels can be modified to fit.

993 4 spoke wheels can be modified to fit.

The spline of the 968 steering column matches the spline bore of the above mentioned wheels.

I do not know if any of the above wheels are later generation 2-stage bags or not, but I would guess the 986 and 996 airbags might be. I also not know how that factors in with the airbag control logic on the 968.

FWIW, my 968 cab will soon get a 4 spoke 993 wheel with matching airbag.

Interesting stuff about the insurance impliations. I can see how getting injured in an accident in a car from which you've removed the stock wheel could be a very negative experience, insurance-wise. Hmmm... food for thought.

Flash, I assume you told your insurance company you had replaced your wheel with a non-airbag type. Did your rates go up as a result? Thanks.

...regarding a 2006 Boxster 3 spoke wheel fitment --- what does "can be modified to fit" entail if you know. As I haven't ever replace a steering wheel.

Caffine-

I believe the 2006 Boxster is a 987- I do not know if these wheels fit. The 3 spoke wheel from the 986 Boxster (1998 to ?) and from the 996 will fit with modification. A picture of a 3 spoke tiptronic wheel from a boxster/996 is attached.

Some of the modifications that need to be done:

Use newer 996 clockspring (968 clockspring will not work).

Run a ground wire for the 996 clockspring horn- the 968 clockspring grounds the steering wheel horn internally- the 996 version requires a separate ground wire.

Have the recess of the 993/996/Boxster wheel milled out a little.

Cut a small notch in the instrument cluster bezel- the wires on the 996 clockspring come from the top and hit the bezel.

Widen the opening on the bezel immediately behind the steering wheel- the 996 clockspring is large in diameter than the 968 version. Also- the four mounting points on this bezel need to be ground down a little.

That's about it.

[quote name='SILVY968' post='61355' date='Oct 8 2008, 06:50 PM']I agree, a great interior upgrade. I got the Porsche crest installed when I ordered mine. You can add if you like the look. Here is a pic.

I got one of these CS wheels from my wife for xmas. I'd like to install the colored emblem. Is this emblem just a stick on decal or what? Thx.

The boxter 3 spoke wheel looks nice and I'd like to keep my airbag.

Can the "tip" buttons be made functional?

The standard wheel is tight on my legs and it would be nice to give myself a little more roomeven if its just the tiniest amount.

Caffine, the colored Porsche crest is a metal unit which is secured with double sticky tape. I went with the small size crest which is also sold on a key chain fob for less than just buying the crest alone for some reason. I bought the key chain version, removed it and attached to my CS style wheel using new tape. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Pinball-

There are two different 993 clocksprings (the mechanism behind the steering wheel)- one for a manual tranny car and one for a tip car. I do not know of anyone who has done the tip wheel conversion and then done the necessary wiring to use the steering wheel buttons to do the tip shifting. Not even sure it is possible. I do know that you can use the tip steering wheel buttons to operate an aftermarket stereo. I believe this was done by someone with a 993.... I think that info can be found on Pcaronline or something like.

I do not have the P/N for the tip clockspring, but I am sure Sunset Imports (Jeff) could tell you.

Would be neat (even though I have a 6spd) to see someone do the tip wheel upgrade and make the buttons function accordingly.

Caffine, if you want an OEM wheel with the colored Crest then you want to order a 930 3-Spoke Steering wheel. I dont know if they were standard or optional on the 930. In any event, they are identical to the 968 CS steering wheel with the exception of a colored crest.

The Steering wheel on page 1 with the colored crest doesnt apear to be oem. If you look at the spokes...it has 4 pieces of leather. The OEM wheels are 1 single piece of leather (like the first wheel pictured)

As far as the OEM 968 CS steering wheel/968 Tequipment steering wheel, it was originally available in 4 colors. Burgundy, Grey, Midnight blue, & black. All but the Black wheel are out of production and very hard to find. I know Auto Atlanta stocked all the colors but i dont think they have any but the black one left. They will also charge you more then Sunset or Pelican will. I know both Auto Atlanta as well as Sunset dont have any Blue wheels (i tried ordering one), so i went with a Black wheel instead. Aside from the wheel/hub, you will need to order a resistor for the airbag light as well as a connector for your horn.

And here is a crappy cell phone pic of mine.
