Cooling system ductwork
#1

Hi,

This is a follow-on from the Hot Engine Downunder post that I made in August. I have ordered a second oil cooler from RSBarn that is shipping its way over here (along with some other goodies).

My question is this - I saw a photo of a Porsche 968 that had a duct or shield from the bonnet/hood latch plate to the top of the radiator. I am assuming this is to help guide the air through the radiator. Is this a standard fitment item? My car has nothing in this area. It does not have the cover which holds the gloves, etc or the rear plastic cover at the firewall (it is a standard model - not a CS - but a 1995 model). If I am not getting the right amount of air through the radiator, this might be part of the problem I am experiencing with the engine overheating under racing conditions.

I have looked at a couple of parts catalogues that show a couple of ducts for the front of the 968, but nothing that looks identical to the cover/strip that I saw in the photo.

These part numbers (from the body section of the manual) show ducts that might match;

95150432101
94457514100

Just for those who are interested - managed to win both my class and the overall club championship this year. First time a front engined water pumper has managed to do this ever. Got many of the 911 brigade very upset.

there is a plastic piece that sits immediately on top of the radiator, and sits below the airbox, covering the gap between the sheet metal and the radiator - if you don't have that, you will definitely run warmer

Hi,

Do you know the part number for this item?

I have attached a photo of the engine bay. I still run the standard air box, but as you can see, on the left hand side there is nothing above the radiator and A/C condenser.

Thanks heaps,

Craig

Thanks heaps for the input.

Car is fixed and waiting at my mechanics. Mods done to try and overcome the dreaded overheating issue include;

1. Second Oil Cooler from RSBarn - car now runs a dual oil cooler arrangement
2. Lower Temp Thermostat (10 degrees celcius)
3. Got the trim for the top of the radiator from the OEM ex Germany - $39 AUD - bonus
4. Mechanic has made up a lower duct to stop air from spilling into the engine bay (all air now is directed into the radiator)
5. Larger power steering cooler now as well

Also got a lower strut brace from RSBarn - now fitted.

Practice day next Sunday - so we will see how it all goes. Cooler engine = more power = happy track day

After winning the overall championship last year it looks like under the proposed new rules I will be going up a class - so this year will be very interesting.

Once again - thanks for the assistance - much appreciated.

Sounds like you will be running much cooler.
I think the biggest issue you had was the missing shroud along the top of the
radiator. Should be very managable with the second oil cooler.

I think part you are talking about that was on the hood is a
heat extractor for the turbo cars. This allows air to pass thru the intercooler
and back to atmosphere.
