Compression Test Performed Today!
#1

As the descriptions says, this morning, on the Eve of Christmas, I performed a compression/leakdown test. Dry compression numbers were 190, 182, 185, and 180, in order from 1-4 or front to back. Leak down was between 2 and 3.5%. There was oil buildup at the top of the spark plug on all cylinders, running down from the valve cover gasket. Any comments on the numbers?

I think that they are decent for my 170k mile engine. I have been ordering and collecting parts for a complete upper end service, just waiting for the right time to do it. The head has never been removed based on my incomplete records, but it may have been. I know it hasn't since 100k miles.

From memory, the compression numbers sound great!

Not sure how leakdown should read, but a coulple or three percent also doesn't sond like an issue with 170K on the clock!

Oil around the plugs is also pretty common in high mile S2 and 968 motors... just a gasket thing (O rings???)

I will be VERY interested to see photos of your Cam Sprockets and Tensioner Ramps! There doesn't seem to be a consistent wear pattern vs. miles with these parts... very odd... maybe oil changes and driving habits???

I think your numbers sounds good. I did upper end on mine a couple of years ago, and I think my leak down was in the double digits. I did mine at about 140,000 and the good news was the cylinders looked good. I could feel a little extra after the upper end job, also.

As Darth mentioned, I'm not sure what the optimal reading should be; however your numbers are all within 10% of each other which is good for 170K engine.

Yeah, I was pretty excited to see such close numbers. Cam sprockets looked good when I bought the car at 160k miles, variocam pads are probably on the last stretch as is the chain. Hoping to get it all done over the month of January. Timing belt was done at purchase, as was accessorie/balance shaft belts. I am at 211rwp as of now, so maybe 215-220whp after upper end service (very wishful thinking).
