Coffee and the 968
#21

Pretty slick, Charlie.

Do you use the 9xauto mounting bracket to "reach" from the console mount screws to a single screw in the base of the cupholder?

Buzz,

I didn't use the 9xauto for this one. I bought the cupholder from Paisley (link in my original post) fo 18 bucks and drilled a piece of sheet metal. As I recall I used a piece of galvanized stock that was intended to be a blank cover for a duplex outlet box.

This is a good thread, should be over on the "modification" forum

I had about given up finding a good solution, but now have some ideas.

I don't think much about reaching way over to the passenger footwell to retrieve my coffee, nor do I like hitting it with my elbow and either contorting my arm to bend backwards or reaching across my body with my left hand. So, based on what I saw above on this thread, I tried two things, 1) Local sports and auto place, GI Joe's, had a very nice clip type (and velcro and suction cup) one that I tried mounting on the door pocket like a picture earlier in this thread, but on the drivers side there is not room for it and my leg, and like I said, I don't want to reach across the car, 2) The wedge (ok, side note here, the guy who is picking these up at $3-6 and reselling them on ebay for $12 + $5 shipping has a little racket going ) - yes its cheap and plastic and looks out of place, but the placement is exactly where I want. I am somewhat concerned that the semi-sharp plastic ridges on the back will cause permanent dents or wear holes in the center console, and to clean up the look, what I am going to attempt to do...

fill in the back with a flat piece of plastic or wood, wrapped in matching black leather and then glued to the wedge. I also want to find some curved plastic that I can also wrap in leather for the part left facing the passenger seat. I think if I can do those two things, then it will actually look nice in the car.

Hi all,

I did two things. Bought a cheap plastic cup holder that has the clip that goes into the

window guide. I cut off the clip and then drilled a hole in the plastic matching it to the

passenger side console screw. (It's black on both the driver and passenger side. If

you measure it correctly) It has room for big soda cups.

Second, I bought a ricer one that fits/ clips on the center air vents. painted it car body color for the smaller cups (Statbuck venti) or the cel phone etc. A little

difficult to direct air flow but works for me.

I just use the Starbucks-issue 4-pot cardboard drink carrier (I tell people it's the Porsche "factory" cup holder). I set it on the passenger side floor, and prop the cup up against the seat and the recline lever. Works great! When I'm done I just stash it behind the passenger seat.

Well I use my shoe stategically positioned on the passenger seat - and when I'm finished I put it back on

not easy to fit in the passenger seat but it holds the coffee in place really well.

Just picked up a "wedge." I do not think that it looks hideously out of place and my significant other really liked it - she always needs a drink in the car. She could sit with it wedged next to her with no problem. Also easy to just toss in the backseat when not needed. One nice thing about this design is that it does not allow drainage - important in humid climates where cans, bottles, and particularly fast food wax paper cups start to sweat after a few minutes.

I went with the wedge as well. I hope you got yours at Wally world for 3 bucks as opposed to Ebay for 9.99 plus 7.50 shipping

I installed the folding cupholder in the center console tray using just velcro. It's invisible unless in use, no drilling, and works well. The only drawback is losing the use of the armrest while in use.

I bought a plastic cup from Einstein Bros and simply place it between the driver seat and door on the left side of my seat. It stays snug, won't tip and easy to reach. If you put it between your legs though, don't forget to close (rotate) the top.

First time driving to work today, and that's exactly what I did! I wedged my cup just forward of the e-brake between the seat and door. I even had to do an quick stop and it stayed put.

I like the cupholder that fits on the door pocket edge. I'm gonna get to the BMW dealer today and see if they have them in stock.

just got the 9x cup holder and considering its installation requires nothing more than the removal of a single screw and sliding the holder's bracket into place, I set ( what will be without the shadow of a doubt ) a new record : 45 minutes ! incidentally, it took me half of that time to install a new starter on the car... and about the same time to change the HCV.

aligning the bracket hole with the one in the panel was one thing, but it took maybe more than one hundred attempts jiggling the panel together with the bracket slighly up, down and/or to each side to have the screw catch on the original hole. you'd think since the panel really has no place to move much, everything should naturally fit with perfect ease, but that friggin' < 1mm misalign before you can get that last hole threaded caused me more heartburn than the coffee which now has a resting place in the 968 might give me..

humiliating to post how inept I must be at these things, but hey, if you can't laugh at yourself once in a while .....

I tired a couple of different holders, all cheapies, and finally got a wedgie. It's great. It works. Doesn't look too bad. It can very easily be removed for short periods of time for the comfort of a passenger. What's not to like?

ouch - been there - scorched that

the 9X cupholder has been a god-send for me - reaching around for that elusive bottle of water sucks - having coffee dump in the car does too - i've been very happy with mine, and it flips up out of the way when not in use
