Check Your Codes
#1

I had my 95 coupe in to my mechanic for a few minor service items. The car has been running just great after the cumulative effects of the air box modification, K & N filter replacement, cam shafts properly synchronized after a previous head replacement, and an RS Barn Stage 1 Chip. I also did some exhaust mods where I replaced the rear muffler with 2 FlowMaster Canister units and into a dual exhaust. I had upgraded the steering wheel to the 993 wheel and clockspring (a huge interior facelift modification that I would recommend to anyone!).

Anyway, after the steering wheel install, even though I did the battery disconnect, I got the dreaded airbag light. I asked my mechanic to hook up and clear the code for me, which he had no trouble doing. He also ran a full diagnostic while in there (only $49.00 !!!) and found a fault code with the Hall Sensor. It turned out to be just a bad connection to the sensor.

What I didn't realize is that when the car records a Hall Sensor fault, it automatically delays the ignition timing by 6 degrees !

After fixing the connection to the Hall Sensor and resetting the codes, what a HUGE improvement in performance (feels like a big torque gain and much improved acceleration). As I said, I was pleased with the performance prior to this, so you can imagine how pleased I am now. And all of this to clear a airbag light!

I know it can be very expensive for the dealerships to analyze codes, but as I said, my independent mechanic did it for cheap.

I wonder how many others are running around with missing HP if they have been put off running a code check due to the dealership cost. At $49.00, I think this is something I will have done at least annually.

Thanks for the tip. I'm taking mine in today - fourth time in a couple months re: tensioner rod... don't ask. - So, I'll have him poke around and see if anything comes up. Thanks again!

FYI, you can identify error codes for free via the "blink test". Do a search on how.

Could never get the "Blink Test" to work on my car. Someone else on the forum thought that it may have to do with US vs Canadian spec cars, but I am not sure.
But you still need someone who can clear the codes for you ... I don't think that the Blink Test can do this.

Couldn't get the blink test to work on my car either. US spec cab far as I can tell. I tried it and flash tried it - no dice.

DME needs to see WOT to initiate blink test. Mine worked ok till one day I couldn't get it either. I noticed the throttle cable was a bit slack. Tightened it to point of only a tiny bit of slack and blink test began to work again. Guess the cable stretches over time.

Bracer - you are correct. Canadian cars cannot do a blink test. But the codes can be cleared by unplugging the battery for at least 30 min.

I still have the dreaded Air Bag light but it's on a Canadian car. If I get ambitious I might try the 30 min disconnect; don't really want to re-program the radio/BT/remote again though. I (and others) am organizing a 3 day PCA getaway at http://www.crownisle.com/ that starts this Friday so maybe I will save the frustration until Monday cleanup before I try it.
I guess it will be like the Hershey event I missed only greener Anyone wants to pop up from WA/ID/OR there is still room. The economy sucks right now so we have 35% less registrants than last year but it will still be about 80 people. But I digress....

that's cool - perhaps it was due to the code being intermittent that i have not seen it work here - both times it failed to clear the codes the fault code was an intermittent one - maybe we thought it was fixed, but really wasn't - it certainly does not clear the dreaded airbag fault though

Even though our cars are not OBDII compliant, I believe there are still "hard" codes and "soft" codes, so perhaps a battery disconnect will clear any soft codes.
