Check Engine Light

The little sucker flashed briefly several times last night.



Aside from the obvious - it is probably some sort of emissions issue - what could be the possible causes? I'll have my mechanic read the code tomorrow. Just wondering what I may be in for ... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Do a search here for CEL you will find the procedure for getting the codes. You will also find the codes listed and what they mean.

Do this yourself before going to a mechanic.

Possible vaccuum hose...as Smokie said, do the blink test yourself first.

on our Nissan the CE light was triggered by a gas tank cap which was not tightened enough after a fill up, on the mbz it was an O2 sensor, so if the blink test shows no fault codes, and you just happened to have filled up recently, remove and put back the gas cap, you never know...

The gas cap thing is usually post 1996 (OBD II). Thank goodness we don't have that system to mess with!



I'll try the blink test.... or that was my plan until neither CEL not check engine light yielded any results in search.

Well, the upside of a down economy is that your mechanic can get you in on short notice and diagnose problems by 10 am.



The problem is a bad oxygen sensor. I'm just glad the system was able to save the fault code and that the problem was not some frustrating short in the system.

You may want to have the MAF cleaned. This can cause the O2 sensor to trigger the CEL.

i'm guessing we are going to start seeing a lot of the O2 sensors failing - they usually do at about 60k anyway - in fact, i think it is a scheduled item at that point - most of these cars are now past that
