Cheap"Borsch Hammer"for VW-AUDI

Noticed this on Ebay.

If only we had something like this to remove the dreaded Airbag light.

For VW-Audi OBDII cars you can download free software and a cheap cable to do a lot of this stuff.

There is (or, more properly, "was") something like that for resetting airbag lights on the 968. A few of us have the device, so if anyone needs a reset, post it and it might be possible to work something out.

I would like to take you up on your generous offer of a potential loan of a reset device, but living in Australia would, I imagine, make the logistics of shipping difficult so I will continue to hassle the local Porsche shop to reduce their $98 service charge to do a job that takes 5-10 minutes.

Is your reset unit a ECUfix?

I am still living with the airbag light as the dealer wanted 50.00 for his 10 minutes. I have been lazy but I promised to build a board and test it so we could have a cheap ODBI reader. Parts are about 15.00 + time to build board. I have a week off in July so maybe then and I will report back.

I had driven for more than a year with those blasted lights - I even resorted to putting black electrical tape to cover the red !. What a pleasure when the light was finally extinguished with this little gadget. Baz - where are you located?

Located in Brisbane the capital city of Queensland, Australia.

Population of 1.9m with usually 5 or 6 - 968. (Probably all coupes as cabs are rare in Australia ). At least two of these are suffering from red light frustration.

I relate to the tape solution as my struggle with the warning light has been going "on and off" for a couple of years.

Usual story,removed the airbag, put in the resistor, u-beaut no warning light for three months+/-, wake up one morning wink, wink. Reset, same story and so it goes on. (Note that when this occurs there has been no battery failure or obvios disruption to power scource.)

I have now reached the point that I position myself so that the thicker rim of the Momo steering wheel hides the warning light.

ObviouslyI have a bad case of denial.

i have had the airbag light trigger twice

once it was a bad battery ground

once it was actually a spike in voltage from a charger - it said the impact sensor was triggered

That`s interesting.

My car sits on a 900MA battery charger all of the time. I started using this after going through two "porsche " batteries in quick order and I have never had any futher problems.


No being a electronics man (down is on I think), what if I put a spike board between the charger and the car?

I indeed have black electrical tape at the moment. Hard to block it all oout at night though!

AFAIK, the only alternative is replacing the airbags with 3-ohm resistors. I still have them in case my little gadget wasn't successful in resetting the light - but so far, so good. I've reset the light two or three times without going to the dealer.

I'd reset it twice with my little hammer. It is so handy to do electrical diagnose your car when you can do all and you do not have to bother about triggering thos damn lights! Because you can reset them by your own!.

I triggered my AB light a year or so ago when I pulled the cluster. I checked the schematic for the AB circuit and disconnected the wire [at the main connector] that supplies power to the light. The connector is located just above the DME. Unfortunately I don't recall the colour of the wire, but if you have a schematic it can be easily found. When I get a chance I look it up...

You pulled the wire to the "Air Bag" light but you can't pull the associated wire to the big red "!" in centre of the dash as it applies to many other failures. How did you solve that one?

While sorting some stuff out that required the battery be disconnected a few times I disabled my airbag warning, I had the light on sonce I got the car and figured as I hard work to do I might set it off again if I got it reset so I disabled the warning for now. You can do this by cutting the wire from the airbag module to the dash cluster that triggers the airbag nag and the '!' light.

In my 92 it is a white wire with a black stripe, coming from the airbag module behind the glove box in a bundle of 4 wires. Cutting this wire means the airbag system never talks to the cluster so you do not see an airbag light come on and then off when starting the car, and you do not get the '!' for the airbag system.

I plan to put in a little inline fuse here where I made the cut to make this reversible, and get the warning reset next chance I get. One of the local 928 guys has a Hammer I can probably use.

I do not know if the airbag system is still armed or not and I do not recommend living with this warning but unless you own a Hammer it might be hard to keep the light off while doing work on your car that involves steering wheel, cluster work, battery disconnects, etc.

I am told some state inspections look for the airbag light to come on and then go off (indicated a system that tests good) so this will not get you past one of those inspections.
