My car's magnetic personality does it again!
#1

Hi guys,

Sorry for posting here but I reckon it’ll get read by more people.

Last night my car’s magnetic personality did it again. Parked at the stop lights, a Toyota Prius decided to reverse into the front of my car. Then he was nice enough to drive off! Because it was a red light and there was oncoming traffic I didn’t fancy my chances. By the time I made the turn and drove down the street, he’d gone!

I went straight to the Sheriff’s Office in West Hollywood and reported the incident. I was lucky to remember six out of the seven letters/numbers of the license plate. I have the first number, the three letters, and I think I know two of the numbers. Bottom line is there are 999 possible permutations, and there can’t be more that 5-10 Prius’ in 1000 cars!

The police are being funy about being able to run a check and narrow down the search. I’m sure if *they* were looking someone, they would have nailed him by now. My insurance company says I don’t have collision cover, but if I can find the guy then they will get his insurance to pay for it. If he doesn’t have insurance then my insurance kicks in. With no one to blame though, they can’t do anything.

In terms of damage, the bumber is slightly cracked just under the ridge that separates the grille (one inch of plastic is missing). The top grille is also gone. I’m figuring $1500 damage because the bumper alone costs $995 (already had this replaced). Fact is, you wouldn’t really notice, but I know the damage is there and I want it fixed.

I guess I’m wondering if any of you guys have any ideas of how to pursue this matter further? I’ve already made a few calls to people who may be able to help, but any help would be HUGELY appreciated!

Best,

milton

Milton, obviously time is of the essence to catch up to the Prius owner before he/she gets the damage fixed. I would remind the Sheriff that this is criminal hit and run since your damage is over $1000.

Best of luck,

Tom

Hi guys,

I did file a complaint at the West Hollywood Plice/Sheriff ten minutes after it happened last night as it was down the road. Still not sure whether that will help me out.

We didn't go over damage value. Are you saying that I should have the damage assessed and then call the police up and ask them to add the info?

cheers,

milton

Infuriating. Had you chased down the guy and had an altercation, it would have been your fault for not getting the police involved. Alert the police, and because its a fender bender and they have bigger fish to fry, they do nothing.

I probably would've gave chase and regretted my actions later. however I think you made the mature choice.

yes - there is a difference between filing a report, and filing a complaint - it may also take a call to the DA to file and/or amend charges - the police tend to treat these things like accidents, file the paperwork, and forget about it
