Caravan to Hershey for DC, VA, MD 968s
#1

I know Darryl mentioned caravaning to Hershey for the cars from DC, VA and MD. Could also include anyone coming from the south. Mu plan is to leave around Friday, april 27th at 10ish. This should get us there around noon. Barring any unforseen stops, eg police, breakdowns. Route I suggest is 495 to 270 to 81 to Holiday Inn. This based on past experience ais a decent route that avoids DC and Balt traffic. Meeting place is variable and could be several spots, i.e. Md drivers would not have to drive to Va since were going up 270. Some place off of 495 or maybe a location off 270. So who's up for this?

I had not thought about what time I was leaving but I'm in Damascus (rt27 halfway between 70 and 270) so it's wide open where to meet on 270 for me (exits for routes 118,27,109,80,85 are all good for me). The question for me is how fast will this caravan be going?

In past caravans, we have made it in 2 hours. It's Interstate all the way. Caravans can be like pushing rope but if the cars in the back can play catch up we can all arrive together. Radar detectors in front and cell phones should keep us all together. Nothing crazy on speed just a consistent 70 -80 mph.

Doesn't look like there are many takers for this caravan. Mark, pick an exit that is easy off, easy on. Duckman, sorry will miss you. Have a safe drive. If you have a problems in the DC area give me a call at 703-471-4846.

Cosimo,

Thinking about driving to DC Thursday night and staying with friends in Alexandria (actually nearer to Mt. Vernon). I might join your little band Friday morning if I can get through the traffic to meet up with you.

Be happy to have you Ralph. Just let me know. The traffic can be horrific but I'm sure we can get together.

Cosimo,

I'm still IN. Let's talk later next week...I'm in St Louis all this week. Great if Ralph can join us. I hope there'll be more interest as date gets closer. I know there are more folks coming up from the south and another couple in our area - perhaps they're not on this board???

I've got FRS radios or we can use our cell phones.

Anyone wanting to join in from the east or the south...perhaps it best to simply coincide arrivals somewhere in the Frederick area on our way up 270/70. Cosimo, if we leave around 10ish, that should put us in the Frederick area around 11 or so, maybe a little before. If others on the road can try to be in that area around the same time, I'm sure we can seek each other out on the road. PM cell numbers if anyone wants.

Certainly, any and all are welcome. Frederick is a good place the the people coming from thw West or maybe Hagerstown. Anyway, if interested give a shout.

Sorry I've been tied up and still unsure of which car I am taking, which also may determine where I am leaving from since one of my cars is up at RSBarn. What route do you plan to take? 15-turnpike? 70-83? or country roads?

Mark, I was thinking of going north on 270, then taking I-81 (Hagerstown) to Herhsey. The Holiday Inn is off I-81. Seems like the best route that avoids DC and Balt traffic. No country roads but a decent "high spped" drive. It looks like it's just Darryl and me so far.

(If I get out of Dallas Thursday morning as I plan... fly home to Raleigh and drive to DC that night)

Thanks Cosimo, I did not even think about getting on 81 up that way. My decision may be as late as Thursday as it all depends on whether the Blue 968 is road worthy and if I have it back by then. Most likely I am a go on the caravan though.

It seems very direct. Take 270 to HAgerstown and turn right onto 81. Pick a place to meet off 270. Somewhere that is easy on easy off.

I had been fearing this... my travel plans for work next week have changed. I am now in Dallas until Friday afternoon. No Hershey for me.
