Humming right along...wish was a good thing
#21

due entirely to the pain in the butt to remove, i would have every bearing looked at and replaced if it was anything less than perfect. there is also a shaft in the tail section that is known to wear. in the end, you could be looking at about $3k to do it all though.

might be better to have it removed locally by your guy, and then the box shipped to bobby at california motorsports in scottsdale az. he is arguably the best on these boxes. he also has a deal with yellow freight, and has very reasonable labor prices. it will take longer, and may not save you much, but you'll get a great job that you won't have to do over.

It's in Mpls. Hope to hear from the folks who have been taking care of it it's whole life by mid week. My local guy didn't even want to remove the diff. I understand that. Anyway, these guys specialize in Porsche repair and race prep, so I'm very confident in their work. I'll let you know the outcome.

well, hopefully they specialize in 968s, because other porsche models won't help them much. that's a very common misconception that many shops have. it's not really even like a 944. this transaxle is no exception either, given that it is not really a porsche box to begin with.

audi. it's a combination of an audi box and parts from a couple of porsche boxes, and then some stuff robotically assembled

Lol, that's funny. I guess the entire car is a bit like that. VAG parts everywhere.

Don't worry, it's in very good hands. The guy I bought it from had it serviced there and they prep his CS and his other 968. This was his Sunday-go-to-meetin' 968. Interesting about the origin of the x-axle.

Soooo... Mpls folks said it was indeed a rear wheel bearing (local mechanics WILL get an earfull). Getting a few other things fixed while there, going to spend about 3K and come away with bearing fixed, transaxel checked, front wheel bearings repacked, replace clutch master and slave cylinders (pedal was hanging up), and all power steering hoses. Don't think my locals could've handled all of this. As is stands, this is really all the big $ I've spent on this ride since I bought it 5 years ago. I love my car!! And again, thanks to all who have answered my newbie questions over the years.

Great to hear that result - the simplest answer is usually the correct one.
