Similar thing happened to me last week. I also suggest looking at the cable to the starter. In my case I just got a click, but the starter wouldn't turn over. I cleaned all the battery connections, no change. I took the starter off and went to a parts store where it tested good, spinning nicely. I went back under the car and cleaned up all the contacts on the starter and the ends of all the cables. I also cleaned the starter body where it grounds to the engine. I also tightened the bolts that clamp the starter down to the engine; they weren't super tight when I removed them. Engine started immediately. Because the starter is mounted on the back of the engine under the car, the cables and connections on the starter can get a lot of corrosion. after the battery connections, look at the starter.

i'll be going to pick up a new dme relay from the dealer tommarow . If that doesnt solve the problem it will be towed to my mechanic . Lets hope this is a quick fix !

When I had my clutch hose replaced w/ the SS hose the mechanic told me about the starter. Before his repair work it took me several attempts of holding the key in ignition position for like 3 sec each time to start my engine. After the work, it now fires after 1 sec. first time every time. He told me that it wasn't tight and needed cleaning. He did it for free as it was easy to access.

I say put her on some ramps and start there.

Hope this helps

just got back from the dealer with my new Dme relay . Took out old one put new one in and it started right up . My only concern is that i took the cover off the old one and to me it looked fine although it was dated nov 92 and my car has 130,000 miles . we will see over the next few days if the problem is actually solved or if this was just a lucky start . But so far so good !

Glad that seems to have solved the problem. However, even if all now seems OK, you should check out the starter cables and mounting. These are well-known areas that cause starting problems. Eventually it will happen, so preventive steps now will save you future aggravation.

I hope you're right, but it sounds more like the flywheel sensor to me. When the car wouldn't start, did it crank at all, or was it completely dead?

The former suggests the sensor wire going bad. The latter would probably be battery cable or starter related. YMMV

The Hall effect reference sensor at the rear of the engine.

hall sensor is at the front of the engine (right behind the distributor)

i think he was referring to the sensor the 944 used at the rear
flywheel sensor?
Speed and reference sensors. The 944 uses 2, and both the 944S2 and 968 use 1 (part number 944.606.115.00).

When they go bad, they cause erratic starting problems. Especially when the engine is hot.

They're also called Hall sensors, as has been said.

yeah, that's what we figured - the hall sensor is up front on the 968 - it really doesn't connect to the flywheel like it does on the 944
