Cabriolet Rear Seats
#1

Hi,

I am looking at a '92 cab - obstensively for my wife, but also possibly to trial a supercharger on prior to putting on my 968 that I race (its and auto). We have two younger kids and the only stipulation is that it has to have four seats. I have seen photo's of rear seats for both 944 and 968 Cab's with rear seat and most have a parcel shelf.

How common was the rear seats versus the parcel shelf as an option and can the rear seats be located and fitted in place of the rear parcel shelf (with seat belts, etc)?

Car is white with black leather interior. Would be interested if anyone knows or has pricing for the complete rear seats to fit a cab. Do the standard rear seats fit?

Thanks,

Craig

The seats you show will fit in your cab, and you should find that you have the mounting points for the seatbelts. I did the swap years ago so that I could take my grandsons on rides. However, because of the lack of shoulder restraints, I only have them in the rear with the top up...any nobody ever knows they're there (at least, nobody outside the car).

The rear seats were, I believe, not a US option. My car, a Canadian car, has them. They are marvelous for nothing.

ROW car have the seats.. my 4 and 7 year old love driving in the car with the top down. I figure I have about 5 years b4 I run out of space back there.... Its my DD so I need the back and use it often. If the kids never fitted, the 968 would be relegated to the 'other car' status and seldom get driven.

to properly fit the full layover seat as shown, a modification needs to be done for proper fitment - you really need to remove the carpet in the seat wells - failure to do that causes the seat bottom to sit up and show gaps and generally not fit well

the later style seat inserts fit better, and do not require carpet removal

be aware that many states in the US will not allow children of a certain size or age in the back seat, as it is impossible to safely fit shoulder belts in that location - i have no idea what the current laws in canada are

There is someone parting an S2 cab with black rear seats on RL.
I don't think he was asking much for them.
If you get them, I'd be interested in buying your storage cubbies.

I've done the rear seat modification to both of my 92 cabs and have used them a lot more because of it. You don't really need to add the seats. The rear carpets are fine for use (along with the belts) and that way you easily return it back to original if you like when you are done.

I talked to my mechanic today. His take on all of this is that due to Australian design rules (yep - I live in the upside down land down-under), the 968's delivered into Australia all had the rear storage area - not the seats as you could not have rear seat passengers. This does not make sense as a 911 convertible (either 964 or 993 version) does have rear seats. I am still waiting to see what this particular car is fitted with so we can make a call. We have two small kids (6 & 9) - so any seat will probably do. If my wife is driving - there will be lots of leg room behind her.

I like the carpet idea - we could probably get a cushion made for short trips.

Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks heaps.

BTW, as for the original question about how common, of the 2,008 North American cabs, 55 went to Canada and had the rear seats from the factory.

I recently made this conversion myself. Same reason - kids. I had to do some *AHEM* modification to the dimensions of the rear seat so that it would fit and allow for the trunk access cushions still fold down. But all in all.. I really don't miss the cubbies (already sold).

The fact that the 968 (Coupe, in my case) has rear seats was a primary reason for my getting the car, as our kids were little at the time. Now that they're teenagers and no longer fit in the back seats, I'm going in the opposite direction and am planning to remove them. They're the old style (full vinyl, no carpet), classic gray, in very good condition, if anyone is interested. I'll post an ad for them soon.
