Car died while traveling a block from my home to run errands. I had a wrench on hand and checked belts and sure enough it was shredded. Hey, these thing happen.....anyways...I towed it home. Do i need a new head for rebuild or just valves, WP, belts, rollers, seals,etc. thnxs....freddie

Which belt shredded? What was the age/miles on them? If your lucky it didn't bend a valve, but it most likely bent some valves. Your looking at pulling your head and doing a refresh on it with some new valves.

sorry to hear. been there, done that..but yeah, which belt ? if it was just the balance belt and the timing one is still ok, sacrifice few chickens while thanking your lucky stars, if it's the timing belt a head re-work ( new valves , etc.. ) will put a dent in the checking/savings account but as you said, these things happen.. and fixing it is still far cheaper than buying a new car..

If your timing belt went, you will likely have bent valves. Some of us have experienced this problem, unfortunately.,, Knowing what I know now, I would be all over this engine, swap it, repair and rebuild my original engine, and make about $1,500 or more selling that. (I don't mean to make that sound like it is as easy as changing oil and a filter, it's involved, and probably 8-10hrs minimum if a good shop does the engine swap. Of course the labor rate is much better if you do it, if you have the time, tools, and knowhow.)



I would also be motivated to go this route because I would so much prefer to perform the work needed to rebuild the engine with it OUT of the car.

Also an unfortunate member of this club. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START THE CAR! If the valves weren't bent before they will be....flat bed the car to the nearest expert and pull the head...say many prayers to each and every deity on Earth...prepare for a $5,000 repair.

bandit, scott, ds, 94cab....ty for responses and sympathies......ohhh the pain!!!.....anyways...i think i shredded the timing, and not the balance shaft b/c it died right away(I run my 944T without balance shaft belt and it runs fine...)...and no i didn't restart....(usually not that smart!) haha..i'll have to check again to see...the used engine is a good idea....not a bad price...thnxs....so i probably need a few new valves when i pull the head huh...anything else??? thnxs again

So sorry to hear about your problem. I should be pulling the head of my engine soon (a general refresh at 115K miles, not because of a belt mishap), maybe as soon as this weekend, so I should be in a good position to offer tips, should you decide to try doing this yourself, and saving a ton of money.

Maybe you can work a trade with RS Barn, send a head, get a head...not sure what Pete's situation is on a rebuild at this time, but its always worth calling. See his banner on this site.

Hi everyone...thnxs for replies. I havent touched car since the fall. Because the car has 140k and paint is poor interior is in fair condion, I don't want to rebuild the top of the engine but was probably going to try on my own to replace belts with my friend. If that doesn't work, I'm going to sell car. What are the chances I didn't bend any valves. I've heard at least one guy who had a 944 whose timing belt broke but didn't bend any valves on his and this gave me some hope. I'm not going to replace water pump or hydraulic tensioner. Anyways, what percentage of a chance is there? thnxs

I got lucky a couple of years ago. I could hear this ticking sound as I drove to get some lunch, not sure what it was? But when I came out to start the car it just spun the starter, the engine didn't engage. Turned out the belt stripped a good 8 or so inches and didn't engage, must of happened as I turned the car off.

Had it towed, compression test, and it was fine. Now pushing 400,000 kilometers and not burning oil. I'm replacing it soon, as the way I drive every day, I imagine it will grenade some day soon. Nothing lasts forever.

Chances are you bent valves. A head rebuild isnt that big of a deal, if you pull it off yourself, and torque it back down yourself.
