Broken horn button
#1

The left side horn button stopped working after I pushed on it (perhaps a bit to aggressively) yesterday. It came back briefly but died again this afternoon. Anything I need to worry about in tearing apart the steering wheel to check the button? Right side works fine. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

No need to tear the wheel apart. Pull the fuse for the horn first. Then use a small screwdriver to "pop" the horn button out. It just clips in. There is a small metal spring underneath. It fits in the recess behind the button on little tabs. They *can* come loose under the button, causing your issue. Once you get the button off, it will make alot more sense.

As Tony said, it's easy to pop the button off. One thing I recommend is using a little bit of 600-grit sandpaper to clean the connections once you have the button apart. My horn buttons were very intermittent but worked perfectly after I popped the plastic button off and worked over the metal bits with some very fine sandpaper.

Since you will be tinkering with electrical contacts in the air bag area, I recommend disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery and waiting 15 minutes or so to allow the capacitor to drain down prior to starting any electrical work. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
