Breakdown !
#61

don't think we are going to get the full story on this motor till its in bits.

but bits that size in the sump is never good, could that be part of the oil filter?

how much of the motor is now in bits?

is the sump right off yet, if not can you get one of those little usb cameras in there?

I'll look at the new oil filter insert I have in the garage but its very doubtful  that piece could be part of it, because the only round ring which broke off the filter insert is much wider and much softer composite , this piece is hard as steel . although i cant really say with certainty that it's not some other part of it, I'll look and see..

not much of anything is disassembled anymore - except the starter is hanging, the under side plastic tray/pan is off, the tensioner on the serpentine belt is loose and hanging , but that's about it..

Trevor can probably address the cameras search... what are we looking for ?

That looks like part of a 3 piece oil ring, which usually gets spit out when the cylinder taper gets very high and blow-by forces it out at high RPM. I still want to know why the motor is seized; that piece of ring is only part of the picture.

so that by itself would not be the cause of the engine seizing ?

If you have a scope look inside the spark plug holes to see how the cylinder walls are. Guessing one of them is pretty scored up.

You're probably right, but has anyone actually tried to scope 968 cylinder walls? I know its a popular recommendation on the internet but I have a scope and its impossible to go straight down into the recesses of the cylinder head and then turn 90* once inside a cyl to see anything. Is there a scope with a perp camera instead of just straight ahead with flexible neck?
At this point it doesn't really matter anyway, the engine is completely seized and the oil glitters with countless metallic flakes, so its coming out and we can tear into it later.

Snap on do one with a 90 degree mirror in the camera end, used one on mine when the seal and pointless cap fell off one of the injectors and disappeared into number 3 cylinder, took me a week to get it out without taking the head off

There are several, made for jet engine inspection. Look under "jet engine boroscope"

Not in my experience. I have seen v8s Run with one dead cylinder for thousands of miles. My friend had a Dodge 318 that spit out its oil ring and scarred the cylinder up, and he ran it for over a year like that. Why the engine is seized is still a mystery.

wow, that's just nuts .. no list of the top 3 culprits which would seize and engine ( after already having eliminated the starter, timing issues, and now pistons/cylinders..)  ?  sure, it's a moot point, since it's not as if you can get in there and fix things back to normal, so a new engine seems academic at this point ..and maybe the oil analysis will reveal just what kind of part failed , broke off , etc which will point to the most likely component failure that might cause the cranking being blocked..or fused .. man, talk about a puzzle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma .

not to mention the large dent in the wallet.................

engines are hard to come by over here so a high miler would cost 4K$ a low mileage lump possibly up to $8K

think i will stay clear of hunting for extra power.. just work on the handling a bit more

Tohe oil is clean, so I would have to guess that it has not been like that for very long. Usually, when the ring takes out the cylinder wall the exhaust gases blowing by dirty the oil quickly. It may have been possible for a piece of the ring to have gotten past the sump screen and jammed up the oil pump, but that's total speculation.

yup, engines are indeed very hard to come by, that's why I mentioned that in the midst of all these dark clouds, the silver lining is the coincidence of Trevor having an extra one.   UK  prices are typically a lot higher for the same thing , probably for most things , but at least for Porsches..and parts ( inexplicable since you're so much closer to Germany .. :glare: ) and often 50% or more higher, so I have no idea what they go for around this neck of the woods, but it's a moot point , since I live only about 2 miles from Trevor's house and if I don't get his engine I'm going to be there every late night in 2016 night practicing with my new trumpet Rock    ok, i don't have one, but if I have any money left over from after "venture"  I can always buy one ..       oh man, I soooo need a drink !!

A large one,

Car prices are the same as spares $45K now for a clean Club Sport, $15K for a half decent coupe, tips and cabs are still lowish money

So how does that happen - the piston ring broke off, causing it to push the rod into something that jammed it and seizing the engine ? Pardon the ignorance if this sounds entirely dumb but I have no idea how those things work so just curious what is the chain of events are here ..

i'm thinking the rod failed, separated from the piston, which allowed the piston to go where it shouldn't, and the ring blew off.

Or you could just get the new engine in and happily drive your car again. That's what I did!
