Bose subwoofer system
#1

I have a Murano (and a Cayman S) that has the Bose subwoofer system. The Murano one is round and it is inside the spare wheel (ie in the back side) screwed down onto the mounting post. I have taken it apart to see what it looks like and it seems to:

1. have no interior sound deadening material
2. be essentially a long tube going round and round with the woofer firing into it.
3. The woofer also fires out the side.
4. the woofer is only 5.5 inches in diameter and is a dual voice coil unit.
5 there is no integral amp.

I have always wanted to build one of these - has anyone ever tried? Seems more interesting than a simple box (albeit with specific dimensions). The Bose unit in the Murano seems to be flat to about 35 Hz and doesn't do much above 100 Hz. It seems to be able to handle a lot of power. I do not know if it is like other Bose units and has signal processing as part of the amp system.

I originally wanted to try to install the Murano woofer in my (968 but it was too big to go under the seats or in the rear footwells. I don't want to give up my spare tire. But the one in the Cayman is even smaller.

bose runs VERY odd ohm loads - they do not work with anything but their amps

their enclosures are very high tech too - every curve and surface is specifically tailored

that being said, i don't like the sound of them much - they seem mushy to me - i have one in the denali - i added a real sub

I've gpot that same sub in my Nissan Rogue. People in that vehicle just can't get over the amount of bass it puts out. I w2ondered if that thing would fit in the 968 spare.............you just answered it. Thanks.

No highs...no lows...must be Bose. Sorry, but I don't have much respect for Bose. Their home stuff is really poor quality. I know they have done a lot of custom stuff with the auto market, but I don''t think it is killer sound. Not bad for factory. My Audi has the Bose high-end system in it and it is good, but not great.

For a small space sub I would look at an Infinity Basslink. It is very small and has high output and good SQ all for a good $. Jusy my $.02.

don't get me wrong - i'm not slagging the bose stuff - i have a lot of it, and like it - i just don't like their tuning choices - they go for a big middle, and not a lot of definition - once i add the right eq to it, i get what i want out of it

To me it's like rock 'n roll - I like it, like it, yes I do. I am not a big fan of the boosted up bass and treble that the younger crowd is into. I have a variety of Bose stuff - a 5.1 home system, a system for my computer and the stereo in the Cayman and the Murano as well as Bose headphones and I like the extension of the bass that their systems get into lower frequencies without that muddy boomy stuff at about 60-70 Hz being so prevalent. I used to have a set of Bose 901s and I have never heard anything to match them since. When i listened to No Quarter from the Led Zeppelin live set the pipe organ stuff would make your blood run cold. I tend to listen to music with as flat a frequency response as I can get so I thought that I might try to build what Bose has done myself.

i remember the first time i heard the 901 - they had a carver cube pushing them - absolutely amazing

i have a bose system in the denali - i reworked the doors, and pulled the fronts off of the bose amp and ran them off of the deck, and added a sub - with the tuning features of the Z2, i am able to get a nice sound

in my living room i have 201s for the front presence speakers and 301s for the rear surrounds - they work nicely with a 1/3 octave EQ on each

i have bose powered roommates for the front speakers in the guest room - love those - i think they are about 20 years old now and still great

so, cleary i'm a bose fan - i just don't like their tuning, and i think their subs lack definition at 40-50 hz - but i can work with all of that

+1 on the 901's. Back in 1980 BC or so, they were the shizznitz.
