[color=#000000]Is a bosch hammer some kind of reset tool? i pulled my airbag off to straighten wheel now the light wont go off. does it take time to reset itself? should i disconnet battery cable overnite? and if so which one.

and finally the little red connection that plugs into bag can be plugged in 2 different ways does it matter?

it is a very expensive diagnostic tool ($1500 is the best price i've seen)



the dealer will generally charge you about $75 to reset the light

If your steering wheel was off center, that could be a sign that the car needs an alignment.

You should have been able to remove the airbag and steering wheel without triggering the light - but that usually means disconnecting the battery and then waiting 45 minutes or so before disconnecting the airbag connector.

I just went through this, and no amount of waiting period after disconnecting the battery will prevent the airbag fail mode once you pull the airbag off the wheel. The fault code is not preventable by disconnecting the battery.



The Bosch "hammer" AKA the "KTS 301" tool (or equivalent) is the only way the fault warning can be erased via the diagnostic port under the dash in the passenger side footwell of all 1990 & later 944/968 cars.



The position of the airbag connector is also irrelevant as to whether the fault warning kicks in or not when you reconnect it.

I had my wheel off a few time recently when I replaced my rack, I had the battery disconnected for at least a day before I did it and made sure any power left in the system was discharged and I had no issues with the light.

You were lucky. Most of the time you get fault code 30.

I have removed and reinstalled my steering wheel at least a dozen times, and never triggered the airbag light. I've never been that "lucky".

Did you disconnect the battery 24 hours prior, also? Otherwise, how did you prevent the light from coming on?



I recently had the steering wheel off and disconnected the battery about 2 hours prior but out of fear of having the airbag explode, not to prevent the fault code, and the light stayed on when I put the wheel back on.



Made a trip to the dealer I usually buy parts from and they erased it for free with the Bosch KTS 301 tool.

i've also pulled a few steering wheels, and never had an issue with the light - i always pull the battery cable 45 minutes before i do, and then touch the positive cable to ground before proceeding - this should discharge any stored voltage - it has worked 100% of the time so far

The best way to prevent the triggering of the light is the procedure as described as also you must not turn the ignition key on for something else. At that time the programs start to control the system.

The same way you must avoid to turn on the ignition key when you have disconnected the dashboard.

When you remove the fuse the light wil also triggered.
