I have searched high and low and can't seem to find the link to the blink test information. Can anyone send me the link or write out the procedure?



I am doing only city driving but am getting like 12 mpg.



88k or so on the car. runs great but hey it is my first 968 so I don't know what I should be feeling.

Sounds like it could be an O2 sensor. The blink test should show you this.

I am getting 17-18 MPG in mixed driving. Sounds like O2 sensor or mass airflow. Any leaks in the line from the tank to the fuel rail? Check the gas cap for correct sealing. Check the filter at the back of the car over the rear pass wheel. If you have a small leak you will never smell it back there.

Thanks, fault code test is what I was looking for.



ok, so I tried position 1 and position 2 with engine off. held accelerator to the floor......nothing happens. My check engine light works. The parking brake is on, not sure if that matters.



Am I doing something wrong?

Just as the CEL light starts to blink release the gas peddle.

When I first tried this on my car the CEL didn't blink at all. Turned out the throttle cable was a tiny bit loose so the system didn't detect full throttle. Tightened the cable and it worked.

Also, be sure you're looking at the actual "check engine" light at the bottom of the far right gauge (oil pressure / battery voltage) ... not the very obvious big "!" trouble light in the top center of the gauge / light cluster.

Yep I have been looking for any of the lights flashing and didn't get anything. I have a feeling my throttle cable is loose....good tip. I will try that and see what happens.



Thanks guys/gals. I am happy to have found an entire forum dedicated to this car. I am a former 944 owner and just moved up to the 968 last month. I love the car. This is still the only 968 I have ever seen. I live in San Francisco and see every other porsche around on a regular basis, but no other 968s yet.

well I tightened throttle and it worked......but I got 1-5 on the blink test which checks out to no fault.



Strange.



I did have the air conditioning button on for the first couple weeks I owned it without realizing it. Could this have caused the horrible gas milage? I am going on the freeway for a trip today so I will figure out what my highway milage is. City I got around 250 miles on my 20 gallon tank. I only have a 6 miles commute to work and it is stoplight after stoplight in san francisco....not the best for fuel efficiency.

I drive in heavy traffic about. 19 miles to a gallon.. And If you will stuck you see the gauge make a downgrade of a quarter every 45 minutes idling.............................

there are a few up in the city - etherjoe, ds968 and a few others are quite active up there - drop them a line



as for the problem, it sounds like you have something going on



are you running at LEAST 91 octane?



does it have an aftermarket chip installed?



is the air cleaner in good shape?



have you had a compression test?



any black soot on the tailpipe?



smoke out the tailpipe?



a tired O2 sensor will indeed cause this condition, and not show anything on the blink test until it is really bad, but before going into that, i'd check the easier stuff first



pull your plugs and take a look at them - they will be a good tell tale of the engine's condition

always 91 octane or above....same with previous owner



I don't think it is chipped, but don't know for sure. PO said it wasn't but I will have to check for myself. I am planning on getting a chip for it sooner than later.



air cleaner is in perfect shape....the engine bay is clean as a whistle and even waxed under the hood.....very clean.



no compression test....i will put that on my list



yes there is black soot on the tailpipe



I am pretty sure there isn't smoke coming out as i am driving....but I will have to have someone else check that as i drive by. deffinatly no smoke just idling.



I just drove from san francisco to sacramento and have 130 miles or so on this current tank. I still show over 3/4 of a tank of fuel. So highway milage seems to be much much better. I will try to do this whole tank on highway and see what I get.



I happen to be at my sisters house in Sacramento and hey boyfriend works at an auto parts store. I had him pick me up the bosch 13953 for $22 and I will splice that on if we decide that is the problem. Couldn't hurt to replace the O2 sensor either way.



Black soot is probably a sign that the fuel mixture is rich, correct?



anything else I should try to pick up at the auto parts store while I have an employee discount?



unknown4u- when you say heavy traffic, how heavy do you mean? I could easily stay in first gear all the way to work but i usually pop it up in to second and maybe third for a second but at very low rpms.







thanks again for all they help. I should mention that I just got the car so I could be pushing the gas a little more than needed between stop signs. Spirited city driving if you will. I know that doesn't help with mpg.

Thanks flash, I am working at tightening that nut but I just can't seem to find the right wench...i mean wrench.



Besides the O2 sensor, any other tips on where to start?



I am at 86k so I think I have a major service coming up. I would prefer to do what I can myself to keep costs down. Well, I guess divert that 'saved' money to upgrades.

well, you are already chaning the O2 sensor - i seriously recommend a run-rite treatment



then, start with fresh tune-up stuff (cap, rotor, plugs, wires)



then, if you still aren't happy, go to harbor freight and pick up a leakdown test kit - 40 bucks - then you will know the state of your engine, and can hopefully rule out anything major



at that point you will have eliminated or identified the "normal" culprits, and would only have sensors and controls to deal with, but the diagnostics of those are likely going to have to go to a shop

Maybe clean the MAF sensor also a "weak O2 sensor" could cause it to run rich with out setting a code

I had a dirty MAF and was running very rich. It also triggered the CEL for my O2 sensor.



O2 sensor was replaced but I still had the code flashing.

Cleaned my MAF and all was well.

If you are checking highway gas mileage, it should be in the 26-28 MPG range. If it is below this there could be a problem that should be addressed. (including loose nut behind steering wheel). Cheers,
