Tire Howl or ....
#1

I have a howl and I think it is coming from the tires. It’s either that or the transaxle is going south. At least that is what it sounds like.

It increases and decreases with speed and doesn’t change with shifting or anything else. I have a set of rather cheap tires on the car right now. They are Fusion ZRis made by Bridgestone. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help

It sounds like the pinion bearing.

If it is the howl will not stop until you get down to about 20-30 mph as the bearing gets worse and worse.

As this is a problem in most of our 968's I would bet that you have this problem. A real fast check would be to beg, borrow or steal another set of tires. Anyone in your location on the forum?

I had a "howl".

I thought I had a rear wheel bearing going out.

It turned it was from worn rear tires. As soon as I replaced the tires the noise went away.

I am afraid that the pinion may be it considering that the sound is a deeper into the car type sound. If it is tires I would hear a change to the tone when I am up near the center barrier wall, I would think.

The car has 78,000 miles on it. Anyone out there replaced a pinion gear on a 6 speed? Is it a pull the transaxle job? As I recall on VWs the pinion was something you could get at without opening up the whole transaxle. Any hope that that is the case here?

Did you mean pinion bearing instead of gear? If that is the case, I just had mine replaced. It required removal of the entire unit and about 3 days in the shop. Just over $1750 total cost.

Yeah, My wife agrees with you on that. She has told me more than once that me and my hobbies are expensive. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
