Bilstein vs Koni shocks on rear
#1

I posted this question on the general topics board and got one "general" reply. Thought someone on this board might be able to refer me to some technical info. or offer any real world experience.

I can buy the Bilstein B36-2052 heavy duty for the rear at $80 vs the Koni sport (#1035) adjustable for $120. Does anyone know if there is any SIGNIFICANT ($80 bucks worth) difference between these two shocks in application or performance? Each company claims to make the best and offers a lifetime warranty. One is a monotube , one a twin tube. One is manually adjusting the other self adjusting. Both are gas charged and designed for the entire 944/968 series. I'm not looking to lower my car and will probably replace the front Boge struts with the Koni inserts at some point. My car was in Hawaii for 8 years and the PO must have hauled his boat anchor in the back of the 968 -- the Boges are really beat!

One viewpoint would be if you plan Koni's for the fronts, you might want them in back also for a 'matched' set. The Koni adjustability on the rears is a weak point in my experience. You have to take them off the car, and go through some gyrations to change the setting. I suppose if you do it regularly, you'd get the hang of it, but it was awkward enough that I just took them to my mechanic to do it.

I hope someone has experience with both so we can get an informed comparison. I did the Konis primarily because I couldn't identify any other option for the fronts.

Have used both over the years on different Porsches and have been totally satisfied with each type. I agree with Tom about the adjustment on the rear Koni shocks. I have just adjusted mine as firm as they will go and leave them like that for both street and track driving. For the difference you quote, I would not hesitate to buy the Bilstein shocks. Enjoy!
