Best tires for a 68 owner on a budget.
#1

I need new rubber in the front. Rear still has a lot of life as they were replaced recently. I've truly come to understand that you get what you pay for and at times pay for what you get. With that said I'm looking for the best performer for around $150.00 each.

My current set up in the front is 225 45ZR 17

I tried Tirerack, tire plus and then Discount tire. I came across this one http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/r...p;ar=45&ra= and thought what’s the catch, after reading some reviews, I decided its not worth the risk.

Chances are one of you out there have found a gem of a tire without paying over $200 for it. If so please let me know.

Thanx guys

David

I am running Bridgestone RE750s and with a little over 7k on them I am very impressed. Good grip and reasonable noise. They are showing little or now wear so far and are a big improvement over my attempt to save money last time - the terrible Kumho. You just get what you pay for. Tires are so critical for performance and safety.

So Kumhos are meant to be bad? I bought mine based on price but I had heard of the cheapies that they had a pretty good reputation? Maybe I'm just used to driving around on my R-spec Toyo's R888 but the Kumhos seem really ordinary when I put them back on.

i have and love the 750s on the bmw - will be buying them again next week (wore out the rears)

the other good option is the Yokahama AVS ES100 - many people here have them and love them - i've driven them, and found them to be a good tire - there are people who have said they got noisy after a while, but i have no idea how their alignment was

one of the best things you can do to save your tires is get a strut tower brace, so you can reduce the toe setting in your alignment, and then make sure you have a good 4 wheel alignment, including ride height set - then of course maintain the inflation - it will add thousands of miles to the life of your tires

I can sympathize. Is it that I’ve been driving on average tires for so long that I dont know good tires? Kumhos were on my 68 when I got it. I now have my car back from IMA and its running stronger then ever. Might as well complete the package with good rubber.

Thanx for all the input, I'll be taking a close look at all mentioned and heading Flash's info on the alignment.

Try Sumitomo's ... 225/50's on the front and 255/40's on the rear.. by 17"

Very similar tread pattern to the Yoko AVS... stick very well, and smooth as silk up to 120 mph (I can only testify to that; if you want to press your luck, go for it!) However, I don't think they are going to be a high mileage tire. I have just a few hundred miles on them and they are showing wear. A Trade-Off...stickyness vs. tread life???

IIRC, Tire Rack sold them for around $100.00 each...

If they come in a 225/45 ZR then that may be the one I'll go with. My cars a weekend driver so tire wear isnt as much as a concern as is grip.

Wear is an issue for any tire. One of the biggest problems with the Kumho/Sumitomo type solution (where you think you save $$ with cheaper tires) is that they wear quickly. While they may still have the tread depth to stay on the road, noise and handling can begin to disappear in as little at 8-10k miles. Spend a little more money and you get much more usable (and tolerable) life from the set... in the long run you will probably break even.

I have learned this lesson the hard way, suffering though a set of almost unbearably noisy and increasingly slippery Kumhos for the second half of the 20k that the darned tread lasted. Now I go up a step. Not Pilot Sports at $300 a pop, but better tires than the $80-100 type.

Karl - I considered them last spring but hesitated. How many miles do you have and how are they in traction and noise?

The Avon's replaced Bridgestone S02s. I find they have 90% of the grip for 60% of the price and quieter than the S02s as well.

I've been happy.

Karl.

PS - I've haven't tracked them...

If you read the posts by avon users, not good comments on the mileage!

If you get 50 owners together, you'll get 50 different opinions on tires. I have Continental ContiExtreme Contact tires, which I got at The Tire Rack for around $115 per tire three years ago. They are quiet, grip fine for street driving and have excellent longevity. I've put around 18,000 miles on them and there is plenty of tread left. For what it's worth, Continental makes a big deal about how the compound in this tire is great for winter driving. However, I've not driven them in anything like winter weather.

I wrote a review of these tires on Epinions. You can read my review at http://www.epinions.com/content_109839617668.

The pros and cons of the web. I've read posts (on other boards of course <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ) Where people that are completely ignorant speak as if they’re experts. Ive read comments such as bose speakers are the best on the market, all mid engine cars are prone to snap oversteer, and one of the worse “everyone should put VVTI in their car because its a cheap upgrade”.

As mentioned in the OP I’d really like to hear what you are running and weather or not your happy with them. If I get a tire thats slightly better or worse then my Kumhos then I have a basis for my next purchase and I’ll learn something in the process. But my odds are better going w/ you guys, fellow 968 owners whose ran through more then 1 set of tires, then some guys review on tires for his Oldsmobile.

+1 - I've got the Avons on my car as well. Seem to be doing fine and they're < $90 a pop.

I have no experience with other tires though so I can't really compare.

Over here in the UK Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's are very popular, it wears well, low noise but handles wet and dry superbly. It may not fall quite in the budget basket, but it certainly is cheaper than Bridgestones etc. It is a really progresive tyre that communicates through the finger tips and the seat better than any other tyre I have tried.

My latest replacement tires are the Michelin Pilot Exalto M&S for street driving and long trips. Very happpy with these tires for daily use but would not recommend them for competion purposes (treadwear is 400, so very hard compound). they are holding up very well, not noisy, give excellent traction in the rain (recent trip to Atlanta, GA had heavy rain all day long) and not too expensive. ($138 each at Discount Tires). Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
