If we use a battery with a vent and a hose for it should we route this hose somewhere special? Or does it not matter at all?

Yes the hose must be guided to the underside of the car. This because the acid must not drain onto the metalparts of the car.. You will have heavy corrosion.

It is possible that previous owners have cut away the hose when they installad a maintainance free battery.
