Back again
#1

I've tried to post this under introductions but didn't had the permission.

Anyhow, I think my last post was about 5 years back.

At that time I drove (and still drive) a 91 (#117) midnight blue Coupe with classic grey full leather interior.

After several moves within and outside Germany I came closer to the Nürburgring Nordschleife (NoS).

Now I am living just 150 km away from NoS and last year I did my first steady race (GLP - Gleichmässigkeits Prüfung) on the NoS.

And immediately I was addicted.

Therefore I was thinking to convert my standard luxury 968 to a racer but was somehow reluctant to do so.

Fortunately, I have heard about the sale of a 968 CS with roll over cage and big front brakes and only 95 KKM on the odo.
Consequenly, I bought the CS and now looking forward to the 2010 GLP season (7 races).

Welcome back. Nice car.

I noticed that there are no extra holes in your airbox. Plan on modding it or do you prefer it stock?

Modifications planned so far for the next 24 months are

- M030 anti-roll bars
- KW V3 suspension
- LSD
- Light weight exhaust (- 12 kg)

If I start touching the engine, I would like to do a complete upgrade consisting of

- modified cams
- modified head
- metal catalyser
- chip and some other stuff

Power should go up to 265-280 HP after these modifications.

Got an offer for this upgrade for about 6K € - unfortunately not within my actual budget.

I think the first thing you should do is sell me those ugly seats!!! I'll be happy to take them off your hands!!

Welcome back and you have a beautiful car!

Thanks for the compliments.

@biotech
I would be more than happy to sell you the seats but I hardly can take the responsibility to spoil the beauty of your convertible with these "no budget option" seats.

Jörg

I'm surprised Porsche offered the CS without M030 or LSD. I've even seen a couple without the Recaro's. Jorg, i have an M030 Sway bar up front & a Lindsey racing sway bar in the rear. may be something that interests you. Its a clone of the M030 bar, but has a little more adjustability. 1 softer setting & 1 stiffer setting. It is also cheaper then the OEM rear Sway bar.

The CS has been delivered with Recaros and several reductions for weight saving, i.e. hatch lock, central locking, air bags ...

M030 was an option and M220 (LSD) was included, that was not the case for the normal 968. The cost was relativly low (heard about 1500 DM / 600 USD).

Later a lot of customers have ordered he CS with comfort options like seats, airbags, rear seats, power windows, ac, etc. because it was cheaper.

It is extremly difficult to find a CS without options on the market. My one has just 337, which is factory pick up as far as I know.

Thank you for the advise for the sway bar - will keep that in mind.

Great looking car! Where did the roll cage come from? Factory?

Cheers,

The roll cage is from Wiechers with DMSB (Deutscher Motor Sport Bund) homologation.

SHA-JR968:

Very cool car! Thanks for sharing the pics and future plans.

Just letting you know that Pete Fitzpatrick (RS Barn) has (or is) developed a 968 race engine - if I can find the link I'll add it. Might be what you want down the road.

How does the CS feel and handle compared to your "regular" 968?

Cheers!

^good question^

I'm interested as well. How does all that weight reduction translate to cornering, acceleration, stopping power etc...

Scott & rhudeboye,

To be honest, I am not in a position to fully answer your question.

Up to now I just drove the car from Berlin to my home (approx. 550 km).

I was driving the CS and a friend was driving my old 968. Cruising on the Autobahn with 220 km/h (took us 3 1/2 hours) there is not much difference and surprisingly my standard 968 even consumed slightly less fuel - ok might be within measuring tolerance.

Cornering I cannot judge at the moment because after the transfer I put the car in a garage ánd didn't register it up to now.

But my asumption is that the CS with its standard suspension is not as good as the 968 with the Bilstein supspension - that was at least the experience on previous track day comparing a non modified non 030 CS with my 968.

As soon as my 968 has been sold or latest by 15 April I am going to register the CS and might be able to give some better information.
(on 17th I am going to the Nürburgring with the CS)

But there is one thing wich I already can tell, the driving position (correct wording?) in the CS is way better than in the 968 - the original standard CS Recaro seats are just fantastic and the roll cage gives the racer feeeling, incredible.

Regards,
Jörg

PS
Stopping power is definitely better with the large breaks.

Thanks for the response - I will look forward to hearing from you when you have more time in the seat with the CS.

Cheers!

Yesterday I've finished my first steady race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with the 968 CS.

Below, the comparision between the 968 and the 968 CS. (both driven on the NoS)

First the cars specs (only options or mods)

968 : aircon, full electric seats, full leather interieur, sun roof, 6-speed manual. Bilstein B6 suspension, 17" rims, Avon tyres
968 CS : Big front brakes, roll over cage, Hankook Evo 12 tyres

I assume the weight difference is about 35 kg (70 lbs).

The behaviour of the cars is almost the same, my feeling is that the Hankooks are better than the Avons.
Both cars suspensions are to soft for the track, but well tempered to handle.

The advantages of the CS are
- the bucket seats
- the steering wheel
- the brakes

The advantage of the 968 is the aircon.

My conclusion is that the 'standard' 968 is still good for track days and is more or less equal to the non M030 CS. The CS has better ergonomics for the track, bucket seat are way better than standard seats and the driving position is much more sportive.

I am looking forward to install an updated suspension on the CS assuming that it will lead to a considerable improvement of the road holding.

Attached are some pictures from the event, my CS and the cars of fellow 968 drivers.

WOW - what a sight, to see all those 968s on the same track at the same time. Thanks for sharing...both the photos and your experience.
