I need some advice from those of you who are knowledgeable of the recent progress in Porsche stereo systems! The facts... my 968 originally came with the CR-1 Head Unit and the CDC-1 CD Changer, which was I think the top of the line in audio back in the day, as it were...
The PO decided he didn't like to have to get out and load the CD Changer to hear his favorite tunes, so he ditched the original head unit AND the changer in favor of a rather high priced JVC unit with remote control, motor driven power face plate (oh, wow, baby, your stereo just, like wow, it just opened up like it was going to swallow something!!! Too Cooool!) and enough flashing lights to light up most of the ricermobiles on the left coast! I turn it on and it looks like the Starship Enterprise Bridge, which I guess some would think is "like way cool", but actually, I like my stereo to just sound good and play lots of albums for lots of hours on that looooonnnngggg drive from Michigan to the Florida Keys! And I like my Porsche Stereo to say "Porsche" on it... why??? No reason... just because I like it that way!
So, I am looking to replace both the head unit and the changer with Porsche branded parts, and I find there are a lot of choices out there... BUT... my main question is what is compatible with what???
If as an example, I were to buy a CR-210 Head, will it work with a CDC-2 or CDC-3 changer??? Or do I need to buy a CR(or CDR)-220 0r 230 to function correctly with a CDC-2 or CDC-3 changer?
Now, the next question is, will say, a CR-220 fit into the stock dash on our 968's, and wire up to the stock harness, or do I have to buy the complete new harness for an upgraded unit? It seems that evilBay has a good and reasonably cheap selection of CR-220's and CDC-3's, but none come with the harness and most were originally installed in 993's or Boxsters or 996's.,,,
And, are these newer stereo units fairly trouble free, or (as in the case of the CDC-1) are they problem prone? I know someone in our group will have some insight to share on this subject! Please...discourse forthwith!!!

If anyone has a on/off button from a CR-1 Unit just laying around doing nothing mine is cracking and I'd like to replace it without replacing the whole radio...send me a PM. Otherwise I guess its Duco cement for me...

Jay

Thanks Brian! That sounds like a good place to start. I located a decent CD-210 Head Unit (withe Code!!!) for $20.00, and if I could have it installed for another <$50.00, I think I am halfway home! Maybe I could trade the "Young Adult" at the stereo shop the JVC unit for the work to switch them out!!!
BTW, what is the diff between a CD-210 and a CDR-210??? Does the "R" have CD playing capability? And does anyone know if it is compatible with the CDC-220 Changer?

Sold for $379.95 new in box... Now, if I could only read the print on the control pad!!!
If anyone is interested in it, the info is here:
CDR plays CD's and the coolist feature is that many music station transmit the artist and name of the song that is playing. Great for keeping up with the current songs.
The radio has the ability to hold 3 presets and has internal adjustments for EQ and pan and front to rear adjustment. It is easy to read at night and in the sunlight.
I reccomend!
So I'm guessing that the CD210 or CDR-210 (or CD220) will operate a CDC Changer as well, IF you want the extended playing time capability?
BTW, Brian...are those 18" Turbo Twists on your Cab? VERY sharp! I went with the 17" TT's on mine only because the deal on as new wheels and new AVS tires was just too good to pass up!

Perfect! So now I'm searching for a CDR-210 (or CDR-220) for sale WITH a code to allow me to use it! And a CDC-2 for the Changer... I think I've got it now! Thanks! REally appreciate it!
BTW, I got the as new 17" 996TT's mounted with new 225/50's and 255/40's for $800.00... could not pass that deal up! And these are real Porsche alloys, not the cheapo's! The modern look really accentuates our cars, I think!

Hey DV I might be interested in your old unit when you're done with the swapout. I've been looking for a head unit with the Chameleon disappearing feature.
