Audi brakes
#1

My wife has an A6 and it just went in for its 45k service. The guys at the dealer told here she needed new brakes. I called to find out how much new pads would be and was told that the rotors and pads needed replacing on the front. This is the first set of pads and the rotors need to be replaced?? They wanted over $600.00 for the front brake job.

I called Sunset for the parts quote and it is about $300 with shipping for the factory parts.

Does it seem right that the front discs would be worn out from the first set of pads? I was told by the dealer you could not resurface the rotors. Oh yeah...the bake wear light has not come on yet.

it's a german thing - to keep mass down, they make their rotors with very little tolerance - bmw and porsche are the same way - i have surfaced all of them, but i've also seen them worn beyond tolerance on the first set of pads - at the rate of comparative pad to rotor wear, the rotors on the M3 will be that way if i can ever get them worn down to the point where the dealer will change them under warranty

that being said, there is always a minimum spec, and you can measure them to see if they fall within it - be aware though that thinner rotors do not cool as well, so you could get brake fade if you surface them - they can also crack

everything but tires is covered with bmw, but the brakes require they be worn past a certain point first, and i'm not there yet

My wife's '04 A6 suffered the same brake rotor fate.

Our Audi mechanic made a great point. He says, "rotor and pad wear is commensurate with how much high speed driving/braking you do". We drive on the autobahn almost daily and have to really lean hard on the brakes at times. We went through a set of pads AND a set of front rotors last year! I guess that's the price to pay.

My $.02
