DME relay-replaced but car still dies
#1

Folks: My 95 Cab periodically would suddenly die--no pattern to it. But it would start up with no problem. Otherwise the car runs perfectly, starts easily, idles well, no stumbling on acceleration, etc. Of course, I suspected the DME relay and replaced it with the spare I had in the glove box--a URO unit. But the issue has reappeared. I suppose it could be the "new" DME relay but.....  I intend to purchase one of the solid state units from Focus 9 but have not done so. No codes are logged when this happens (according to my Durametric). I do believe it is an electrical issue because there is no stumbling or erratic behavior before it quits. Comments?

Interesting, in these cases my first thought is the ignition switch because it is linked to other strange issues. With my cab, it was causing the heater valve to engage at random times, filling the cabin with hot air. How it was causing this, I have no idea. But replacing the switch solved the problem.

It is a challenging job, but doable for the average mechanically inclined 968 owner. Let me know if you need advice or direction if you choose to do it and decide to do it yourself.

A friend has just been through this random dying issue in his sport, replaced the DME relay and the ignition switch was replaced a few years ago, he replaced the crank position sensor and fuel pump, but it still randomly just cut out, same no codes, but he did notice the tach would not bounce when attempting to restart, the bad news is that it appears to have fixed its self, it has just stopped doing now he is using the car far more often

I am convinced its a bad or dirty connection that has been fixed by movement in a connection from use, but who knows where,

These cars dont like just sitting around

I should add, that say I am travelling at 40mph. When the car quits, if I press on the clutch (car in gear) then release it, the car starts and runs perfectly without touching anything else.

Ok so a 40 mph bump start, I wonder do you have a big bunch of keys, and have you replaced the alternator harness?

I only have the car key and gas cap key in the ignition. I have tried giggling the ignition switch while driving and that does not do anything. No I have never replaced the alternator harness. What is the link there?

Sounds like you're on the right track with an electrical problem due to the sudden and intermittent shut down. Take a very close look at the cam sensor wiring. It get cooked by the exhaust/hot engine. If it loses signal for just a moment, the car will shut down.  If that is PERFECT, then take a look at the crank sensor/wiring.  This is much more difficult as it is on the back side of the engine and very difficult to inspect. Sorry for the huge photo, not so good with that kind of stuff. You'll see the cam sensor connector and the wiring where i put some heat wrap around it in the middle of the photo.

Looks like the photo got dumped, Oh well

OK, I will check out the cam sensor and crank sensor wiring. Thanks.

The alternator harness is a known failure point, the insulation breaks down and can short the alternator out, this could cause a issue

The cam position sensor will not stop the engine from running, it just makes the ECU switch to all at once for the injectors rather than sequential

You can unplug it an drive around all day, the crankshaft sensor failing would show on the dash as the tacho would cut out, but well worth checking the plug and pins
