bombfactory - In a sealed enclosure system, the response rolls off slowly. In the listening tests I did with an audio test CD you can definitely still hear 40 Hz. Since the Lowest string on a Bass guitar is 41 Hz, that's important. Yes the rated F3 is probably somewhere around 65 or 70 Hz, but don't let that deter you from adding low end. Here's a freq response graph I took in my car with the source being an iPod running pink noise from 20-20K. I used an app on the iPhone so the microphone is also contributed to the bass rolloff. But I think it will be interesting to compare this response to say a new car "high-end" audio setup.

Thanks JG, looks decent enough to me. I've already bought my 8" sub speaker, my amp is a 5-channel mounted in the spare tire well, so as soon as my box arrives I'll fit it (I've heard it takes a little trimming for the 968) and be good to go!



Which reminds me, I still have some DynaMatting to do in both cubbies.

it all depends on how accurate you want it. i'm a drummer, and an audio engineer, so low end accuracy is everything to me. it may not matter to somebody else. i'm still fighting my subs, and may yet change them again.



while that graph looks like it supports 40hz, if you ran a 40hz tone generator and held it, you would find the cone waffling. yes, it will still make low end "noise", but it won't pulse right. we had the same situation in a studio with some westlakes. sure, they would make noise at 10hz, but it was ugly.



i'd also like to know what mic you used that would go that low. i have a couple of large diaphram condensors that do, but none of my dynamics are accurate down there. i'm always looking for a new mic for this kind of testing.



again though, it's a car, so how good could it get anyway? i'm definitely not meaning to sound like i'm pissing on your parade. i've been messing with different sub configurations for this car for about 7 years now, and still fiddling trying to find the right setup. it does not help that my car is a cab either.



as a side note, the kla box dropped right into the left side cubby, but is a small problem in the right, and you'll have to fiddle around there.

Flash - Yes, you are right on. For any car, but especially a 968, you have to work around the limitations. Unless you want a big box in the rear compartment for everyone to look at, the bass is going to be somewhat limited. For me, this is a totally acceptable bass solution.



The mic I used was the iPhone4 mic. It definitely has low end roll-off.

Flash doesn't the right side cubby box from KLA drop in fairly easily, while the left side is more difficult due to the sunroof motor assembly?



Also, since my amp has an adjustable crossover freq. for the sub, I should be able to minimize the 'waffling' right? Although how much probably depends on the cutoff slope, I'd give up some 'deep' for more 'clean' bass. I'll definitely pay you a visit once all my goodies are in place.

hmmm - i didn't have a sunroof motor, so that never occurred to me. the right side has the filler tube assembly. i had to move that around to fit the box. seems like they both might present a problem.

the mic only goes down to 150hz (note the big hump in your chart at exactly that spot). the phone itself has a low pass filter at 150hz too

Bombfactory is correct. The driver side KLA box doesn't come close to fitting with the sunroof motor and bits. I originally ordered the KLA box for the driver's side and there was no way it was going in the cubby on that side. KLA was kind enough to exchange it for the passenger side and that one works. However it did require some massaging to get it to fit. Nothing too major, about an hour of slowly sanding corners and the like got it to fit on that side.

bummer. i never thought about the motor, since i don't have one there. that sucks.



a number of years ago i was going to use those boxes, and have one on each side. i managed to get them in, but the sound still didn't make it forward in the cab, so i ditched it. i also couldn't get a low enough frequency response due to the volume. the best driver i could find that required the least volume of air still required .35 cu ft in order to get down below 40hz and the kla boxes were only something like .27 cu ft.



that's what got me going on my sub project to begin with. another slippery slope for sure.

Bob's setup is as close to Carnegie Hall as we are going to get in a cab. Only he would think it needs to be massaged. I have a honking big powered 10" in the spare tire well. It bangs and thumps around in there and only occasionally sounds good. When I want more bass in the passenger compartment I flip down the rear seat back flaps. Tres elegant nes pas?

OK, going in to my shop today to design/fit rear cubby and spare tire well sub boxes. I have not yet decided if I want 2 cubby's or single sub in wheel well (leaning towards single). I think I may put the amps (two of them) in the cubbys with computer fan.

Thinking of single 10" Memphis Sub to go with recently discovered speakers in doors and rear panels.



Need help with air space requirements, porting and any other sugestions

Subs are inversely proportional to age right? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I have an 8" in one cubby as I just wanted to fill in the bottom end of the rear drivers not feel my teeth rattle with Dr. KYz and Dizzy G. I still like to have one spare cubby for tools, polish and a can of run-flat. My amp is in the wheel well but still has plenty of room for storage if we go away for the weekend; don;t need much of an amp for 8".
