Any Alternate to the Flywheel Lock?
#1

For anyone who has replaced your front seals etc., has anyone found an alternate to the use of the official Flywheel Lock in order to remove the crankshaft pully nut?

Performance Products wants $120 for one, and on any other car I've always been able to lock the teeth on the flywheel with a large screwdriver! I hate to try to borrow one from the professional mechanics, so has anyone had luck with a simple alternative?

Thanks in advance!

I remember paying about $60 when I bought one from Sunset Porsche two years ago.

Replacing a damaged dual mass flywheel would cost more than $800. In my opinion it is not worth the risk of using a screw driver.

If you have a tiptronic then you can use the 944 flywheel lock.

If you could find a dead starter and weld it up you could use it as a flywheel lock.

Still not cheap, but at least the Porsche tool isn't the only game in town:

You may be able to lock the flywheel by removing the clutch access panel and removing one of the pressure plate bolts and threading in a longer one that will lock the flywheel against the bellhousing. I would still recommend the flywheel lock. Consider the cost of paying someone to do your seals and the money you will save doing it yourself. Porsche parts are not cheap and 968 stuff is rare and hard to find used.

Thanks for all the offers and advice!

I ended up fabricating a tool similar to the factory tool. It took me a couple of hours plus the trip to the hardware store for the 1/2" rod for the pilot, but it worked fine!

It's all about the process, isn't it?

Lance I bet there would be quite a market for those if you started producing them.
