I sent my cluster to North Hollywood Speedo for an odometer repair (electrical, not the gear) and had them cure this while they had it at their shop. There is a variable thermistor that goes bad. They said it was fairly common and mine's been rock solid ever since. If you can find a working guage or pick up a spare cluster, it's an easy swap. As Brian suggested, check your connections, but my bet is the guage itself, especially if everything else is working OK.
My 944 had a tach issue that would keep it stuck at "0" and then it would cure itself. I never got around to fixing that one!
