My son's car suffers from the erratic engine coolant temp gauge (pegging at hot and a bump or slap of the dash will sometimes correct) and the occasional delayed speedo operation. In my reading I see people who have fixed the temp gauge by disassembly and cleaning; others say the gauge needs replacement. Is it that during the replacement of the gauge the contacts are disturbed thus correcting the operation, or do some cars indeed require new gauges? Also I have yet to find a definitive repair explanation for the speedo occasionally sticking at zero. Is there one? All other gauges function perfectly. Also, I am a 40 year automotive service veteran with extensive electrical knowledge, so your explanation can be as high-tech as you like. Thanx, and thanx for noting his birthday today!

Hi, I also have has some "sticky" or erratic gauge issues.
Sometimes they just go bad and need to be replaced, not hard at all.
On one reassembly, I found that the 3 instrument cluster cable connectors do not seat completely, this can cause some of the gauges to be a bit weird. Most of the time the plastic levers on the cables are broken off, so they do not seat the connector completely.
I would recommend inspection of the 3 connectors, if seated fully, I would simply locate either the 2 bad gauges that you need at a wrecker for 968's. Ebay is a good source, or the whole cluster. Try Oklahoma Foreign and Parts Heaven. While in there go through the lamps and replace any that are burned out.

I sent my cluster to North Hollywood Speedo for an odometer repair (electrical, not the gear) and had them cure this while they had it at their shop. There is a variable thermistor that goes bad. They said it was fairly common and mine's been rock solid ever since. If you can find a working guage or pick up a spare cluster, it's an easy swap. As Brian suggested, check your connections, but my bet is the guage itself, especially if everything else is working OK.
My 944 had a tach issue that would keep it stuck at "0" and then it would cure itself. I never got around to fixing that one! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif[/img]
