Another 968 register?
#61
DS,

Please face Stuttgart and bow in reverence 3 times, while reciting "Por-sha, there is no substitute".

Jay
Now THAT makes perfect sense .

And funny timing also; as I was responding here , a trailer to some upcoming movie ( can't remember the name ) just played on TV where in one of the scenes a young lady apparently rear ended a guy's Boxster and he exclaims : " you hit..it's a PORSCHE !! ( he did use two syllables ;-) ) She points to the car's emblem and says , " No, it's a Boxster ! " That line may be barely amusing in its real intent, but little do the writers know how funny that joke really is to those who really think of the Boxster as not a real Porsche -

I know I'm late to the game on this topic, but wanted to share my experience with the 968 Register. I had gotten Jeff's information prior to joining the register and had e-mailed him directly; he usually responded promptly with a helpful answer to my questions. When I put my information into the register I didn't get a confirmation or any communication until several months later (the explanation that third party administers the site makes cense as other communications were prompt). Since the belated registry confirmation I've gotten a news letter e-mailed from Jeff every few months.

I haven't seen a post from Jeff in a while? I have sent a few emails about Hershey, Pa. but never heard back? He is an authority on any thing history wise of 968

he doesn't hang out here anymore. he didn't like our position on what he is doing, but we have to walk a very fine legal line. rather than agree to abide by our decisions and wishes, he took his ball and went home.

as another shining example of playing "hide the ball" a color chart was posted, albeit incomplete (missing colors that i know are out there). this is something that is available from porsche in their sales literature. i have some of them, but am missing either 1 or 2 years (not sure). the chart posted was also missing the most valuable of information, which is how many of which color in each year. with a database, this is simple spreadsheet stuff, and should be no problem to post. yet, that is kept from us.

he is now whining about me, as if i was the problem here. i take pot shots from the peanut gallery on other sites from other people for this too. the owners of this site chose not to open themselves up to litigation from porsche for distributing something they charge money for, and without permission. we offered to give him site space for it, presuming its authorized and legitimate origin. no dice. we further asked that he not use this site to distribute that information without providing permission to do so from porsche, or proof that he got it legitimately elsewhere. he continues to refuse to divulge his source, which to any logical mind would confirm it dubious origins. he broke his promise to make the information available to us, yet continues to disseminate it at will to anyone else. not cool.

not surprising though. when he visited out here, i hooked him up with tickets to leno. not even a "thank you". whatever.

one of these days i'm going to get ahold of a useful version of the database myself, with permission, and post it for free for everyone. that stuff should be here. this is the repository of all things 968

the pca register has been sullied by this. i would avoid interaction with it. if you're not a part of the solution, you're a part of the problem. one of these days somebody is going to contact pca, and pcna, and get this resolved. a filtered form of the database, and one which protects pcna's rights and revenues, should be available and posted.

Why can't you get this site approved by PCA? It does not seem like it should be that difficult, then you could provide links to official Porsche sites and links for data.

i just haven't done it. we have a bit of a bug up my butt about pca and their attitude. they are ridiculously anal, and we don't want to be held to their restrictions. i suppose it's worth looking into though.

when it comes to the database, the issue really isn't with pca though. contrary to popular belief, pca has no real connection to porsche. they are just a club, much like this one.

Well, I called PCA about the fact their site is not working and I asked about a registry and info on my car - They directed me to Jeff Coe and I told the truth. I filled out the form on Jeff's site, never heard a reply, emailed him directly, he said he would ask his webmaster about it and that he has ignored any more of my recent attempts to contact him.

I would like to know specifics about my car. I told them I looked online, but no one would publish any specifics about the cars without approval from Porsche or PCA.

I said I have a polar silver 968 with a red top and interior and I have looked extensively online and cannot find another photo that looks like my color combo. I would like more data and to know how many were produced. I was told the director of PCA would call me back.

I will see if he calls me back or not. I don't' see why this information has to be restricted. Most should be public domain. I mean it shouldn't be that hard as you say - for colors, you get all the brochures and list the available colors.

Oh well, some people have to be difficult. If I had known I wouldn't even get an acknowledgment, I would never have entered my car into the registry. Not trying to stir the pot, just asking questions.

lol - i'm definitely a pain in the butt, but this is just silly stuff.

again, pca has no connection to porsche, no standing regarding information, and is not in a position to answer your question.

porsche cars north america will sell you a certificate of authenticity, which will have all of the specifics on your car. cost is $100

I will probably get one, but it is still a silly thing to be so expensive.

You are probably right as you have been doing this for a lot longer than I. We will see what kind of response I get if any.

I totally understand the covering of one's butt with a major worldwide corporation, but hey, the info should be allowed out there.

i agree. i also know that porsche will sue at the drop of a hat, if they think somebody is picking their pocket, and they find out about it. plenty of horror stories about that out there

I am sure. I just don't like filling out demographic info on myself and my stuff under false pretenses. If he is not going to do anything with the info, ie.. make it available, then why do it?

If he can't do the job, then get someone who can. This is just like when I signed up at another 968 site - I waited and waited and waited - nothing - so I cancelled my registration and sent an email telling them why - still no response - so here I am. Oh well their loss...lol

If that ever happens I will sell my stake in 968Forums, withdraw my membership and most likely sell my car. I would burn my momentos, demand that all references to me and Porsche 968 be removed from every website, delete my photo library and deny that I ever owned a 968.

The fact that I was ever a member of PCA is a personal embarrassment to me, too bad they have their heads so far up their @$$3$ that they don't even understand how dispicable they are...

Just my $.02

This is so true. My daughter was looking for Porsche cuff-links to give me as a present. She did not want to spend a large amount, so she was looking for a "knock-off" version at some local specialty retailers. Several places she visited told her that they would not dare carry any "off shore / knock-off" Porsche items, since they knew of retailers that had been put out of business because of lawsuits brought on by the P lawyers!

I think it really depends on the chapter of PCA. I have been to events put on by 3 different chapters and was amazed at how different the vibes were at each one. 2 seemed pretty down to earth and most people there seemed like me, someone who can appreciate different Porsches even if they are not my cup of tea. Most of the people at the other one gave off the impression that if it wasn't a 911 or 356 ,it was leftover garbage.

I have yet to go to a local event, but they seem nice so far. I have been invited to several events and told them that my car was not yet ready and they said, I didn't need to have my car to participate at a get together or event.

I will as soon as I can take the car.
