Another 968 register?
#21

Jeff Coe's list is over 500 Cabs and the last time I heard Graham's list was aboiut 130

PCA Register is roughly 130

Maybe Jeff and Graham could just merge their lists and post it here.

Absolutely, the more people who share the information the better for PCA as well as the 968 Register. Bob Blackwell.

Some people will always have a knee-jerk reaction to PCA involvement. In this era of the occasionally fractious 968 community another conflict variable may not be a good thing to add to the mix. Then again it may be a good idea. I'm not sure.

PCA Membership is required to join the 968 Register.

Anyone know what is happening with this? I have filled out the online forms, emailed Jeff COe twice and still have not gotten any response.

Thanks

I registered back in Feb, and communicated with Jeff by direct email, but I've seen nothing new on the 968 register site since. I did get a email newsletter from Jeff 2 months ago, but thats been all.

I met Jeff at the Parade last month and asked him why the cab registry is removed from his site, and he said something about a link maybe broken, but that the information should be available by logging into the PCA site. I havent looked for that yet, cuz I find it hard finding anything useful on PCA site. Jeff did show me a detailed chart that he said would be on the site within a month. But he did not offer me a hardcopy of the chart, which described numbers of cars with which color combos etc.

yeah - he's playing "hide the ball" with that stuff. we've asked him repeatedly to post it, but he wants to keep it to himself. lol - i think he likes the attention.

I registered my car and have not even really gotten any kind of follow through - he sent an email saying he would check with his web guy and that was several weeks ago. I am getting a bit annoyed. I dumped all my info on the other sites after waiting for weeks for access and then found this site. No response becomes negative marketing very fast in today's online world.

I bet I could start a facebook page as a 968 registry and it would fill a heck of a lot faster.

Uh, who gives a flying hoot about either PCA , or about 968 registry info ?! Both are of little or no significance. IMO.

@inked, I had the same exact question (and conversation as several others) over a year ago.

Wouldn't these cars be registered at their respective DMV's?

Jeff has been the unofficial statistician for 968s since before I got involved in the community. He used to scour car shows and ask people to send him information regarding VIN, color, options, etc. Over time, he has become the 968 Register Advocate (Dick Petticrew, to Don Hassenbein, to Jeff). So now, the evolution from Jeff’s “List” to the register is pretty much complete. I would not say that it is a requirement to be a PCA member to be on the register anymore, my membership has lapsed and I don’t foresee ever renewing it. As far as I know, my car is still on the Register.

At some point, Jeff locked into a trove of information that gave him (more or less) complete data all NA 968s. Jeff has declined to share the database as a whole, either here, or through the register, he compiled it so this is his right.

We have asked Jeff not to publish specifics about individual vehicles as he does on other sites. This site has a very high threshold for copyright infringement or any unauthorized use of intellectual property, and we simply don’t want to chance a lawsuit based on Jeff’s unwillingness to not only share the information, but also refusing to share the source.

I guess my feeling is I offered up my info when asked, thinking it was going into an open database that would be "available". Had I known the closed nature of it, I might have responded differently.

I guess if I were to draw a distinction between "Jeff's Database" and "The 968 Register", I believe that the Register website should publish the official list provided that it includes only those 968s owned by PCA members AND who have opted in. As to Jeff's database, I have no comment about how Jeff controls his own information.

At the time, I didn't know there was such a distinction, and the website is less than clear. It actually leans toward them being the same thing.

Had I known nothing would ever be done with the data or that I would not be able to access the data, I may not have provided my data.

My Volvo is on the registry and that I have confirmation of and it adds to the credibility of my car since it is one of only 500 built.

I sort of assumed the same would hold true with the 968 registry.

Jeff's been a 968 enthusiast since ~1991 when the car was announced. He no longer visits this site but is frequently on Renn.List. He's also not constantly on email, so sometimes it does take him a while to get back.

The database file of 4,677 cars that he's spent countless hours manually inputting option lists, names, locations, etc on is still a work in progress and it sounds like he hasn't had a ton of time to work on it. It's a hobby for him. No one is paying him to put it together or collect information nor is he selling the information to anyone. He'd be happy to look up information on any specific car if you ask him, and I'm sure eventually that the 968register site (which looks like it was built in 1998) will be updated with the information and available to PCA members.

Thank you, Blau...Jeff is welcome here any time. We did ask him not to publish certain specific information, but he is always welcome.
