Another 968 register?
#41

Forgive my ignorance as I don't recall, but was PCA membership a requirement to be included on Jeff's site? While I am not Peter Pan what is it that I'm missing about about the distribution of what is public info? Jeff certainly has a right to control what he has assembled at what I assume must be his own time and expense. My limited dealings with Jeff have been straightforward and I see him every year at Hershey and talk for a bit. The last three to be exact. I for one only want to know how many coupes and ca s are left in NA!

Yes, PCA membership was a requirement a few months ago when I put my info in. I thought I would at least get an acknowledgement that my car was on the register, which might give credibility to it's rare and collectible status.

I had no idea that the information was simply being hoarded. I sort of resent this. I am sure this does not happen with the DuPont Registry...

If you are not going to release the data and make it searchable, (maybe someone wants to try to buy their old car back) then there is little point to collecting the data.

If someone emails and asks a question, the polite thing to do is respond to the query and if you say you will get back to someone, then do it! This is called customer service.

I emailed Jeff to ask about the website vs. his database list and this was his response. I'm not sure who actually maintains the site, but whoever it is doesn't seem very interested anymore.

I do not maintain the web site. I rely on another PCA member to maintain it and provide me the applications when they are submitted. Those that are on the registry distribution lists must have received my e-newsletters which I publish multiple times a year and contain articles about 968s and events. I recently organized a speed yellow 968 get together as part of the PCA Zone 1 concours. Although I don't publish the full databases, I will answer any production data question you might have. All the work I do is on my own time.

I don't think I have received anything as of yet. I don't think there would be any harm in publishing some of the data.

I think it could even be part of this site. All you need is an excel spreadsheet and print it to a pdf file for download. Let people upload their data and compile it.

Rare and collectible? Compared to a Mustang its rare, but not a 250 GT. Collectible? Collectibility is really a state of opinion right? I've seen people collect things that I would never have thought collectible. Translating rare and collectible into valuable is another story.

distributing the information, as he distributes it, is quite likely a violation of PCNA property rights. they charge $100 for a certificate of authenticity, which contains exactly the information he is distributing. that represents a half million dollars to PCNA. they have sued people for a lot less value in property rights cases. i would think they would be of the same mind on this.

we have asked where jeff got the information, as we of course wanted to host it, but needed to be sure it did not come from PCNA without authorization. he refuses to divulge his source. we suspect it is not authorized, which is why we asked that he not use this site to distribute the information until he shows us that he has the legal right to have it.

we asked for a summary sheet, which would not violate any property rights, but he refused. he promised to post it on the PCA site. he has not done that. he promised to send it to us. he has not done that.

something is wrong somewhere.

I suspect that as our cars age, and sadly as more of them are taken off the road due to wrecks and such, the rare and collectible status will increase. There will always be someone interested and as they say, there is a bum for every seat if you can find that person. Every small item to me adds up and adds value.

If he is not doing anything with the data, then perhaps he should close down the site since it seems to be helping no one but him, and is not available to anyone as well as being misleading.

sadly, I don't see that happening. even if 99% of all 968s disappear from the road ( hopefully mine is in the 1% remaining ) I'm afraid the rarity or "collectible" status of these cars, outside our small circle of 968-passionate forum members here, will never become reality. to the clearly ignorant world at large, this is just a better looking 944 and if it becomes extinct no one cares.

Sigh..

And for decades the 914 was only a "glorified" VW...seen the prices for a well preserved 914-4 lately, let alone the 914-6's?

Ds off your med?. What are you? Debbie downer. Can't you let some of us, even if we are foolish and peter pannish dream that some day our cars will have more value than to just us? lol You west coast folks are like so totally real. Black or white while we east coast types dream the dream.

Say what you want, I think they will continue to appreciate in value due to a scarcity, whether real or implied...There is a 6 speed cab for sale right now 40 miles away from me for $15K

When people talk about "prices", I have to wonder if they're referring to asking prices, or what people are actually getting. When I tried selling my 968 a couple of years ago, a perusal of asking prices on Autotrader indicated something in the neighborhood of $11 - 12K being reasonable for a 968 in mine's condition . After months of no calls, I finally got an offer from somebody - $7K. I was appalled, but in hindsight, it seems his offer was not only reasonable, it might have been a tad generous.

I doubt it would be worth a penny more today, thus the track car conversion project.

Call me cynical, and an east coaster's dream-killer , but this car has never had a true following ( the 914 did..) and not sure diminishing 968s numbers out there will change that. I HOPE I'm wrong, and these cars will eventually reach 356 or similar iconic status, but doubtful I'll be around long enough to see that. Don't get me wrong, I think in addition to all of its other and many attrubutes this is ( IMO ) one of the top 10 most beautiful cars ever made, but we're definitely in the minority and I dare say delusional to think we have a future Ferrari Dino on our hands.

well and wheeler dealers bought a dino on the cheap, if you can believe the show - which seems more credible than most, and redid it.

I really don't have plans to sell, but as I enter small car shows and the like, it would be cool to show an info sheet that it was on the register. It really shouldn't be that hard to compile if everyone sends their info...I still don't see what his hang up is about sharing the info. If he is just hoarding it, then there should be a disclaimer on his site - instead he requires PCA membership which to me implies Porsche approval or legitimacy if not sponsorship. I mean, if you are just hoarding the data, why require a membership in PCA - just have everyone send in their info regardless of membership - that way it would be more complete instead of implying some sort of exclusivity.

Whatever....

I have never stepped into a church in my life ( well, other than as a visitor of some of the world's masterpiece ones ) but will nonetheless seek and find the first confessional booth available and then confess, repent and make sure I absolve myself of any blasphemy I may have comimtted against the 968 icon.

p.s. btw, since I'm way past being a young boy I should have no worries about going into a confession booth with a priest nearby, should I ?!
