An observation re: the recent elections.

ds - there is a difference between physical addiction and psychological addiction. pot falls into the latter category, just as many other things. the strength of mind and will determine how easily one falls prey to psychological addictions. the mind can also overcome physical ones, but it takes a lot of mental strength and will on some. my mom quit her pack a day smoking habit by one day saying "enough". no drugs, patches, therapy or anything. she just quit. she has a very strong will, and an IQ north of 160. she doesn't let anything stop her, and doesn't like to think anybody else is more capable. (lol - she was pretty pissed when my results came back higher than hers).

lb - if they haven't yet worked out the pills for the other things that are medically beneficial, then they should. if it needs to be an inhaler, then so be it. we have the model for that method too. people should be able to go to the pharmacy for whatever the FDA says is appropriate for whatever ailment.

That's what I said ; he is an " addict " psychologically without any apparent impairment physically.

yup - how much impairment is relative to the individual, just as how good somebody's jump shot is, but there is always an impairment. imagine what they could do without that.

I am somewhat amused by those who have stated that they don't do any drugs and then go on to describe their alcohol usage! And I'll wager I'm one of few here, if not the only one, who isn't physically addicted to caffeine, as is the overwhelming majority of American adults. Talk about peer pressure, I am amazed at the lengths people go to to try to get me to drink coffee! Don't get me wrong, I'm not against coffee and I occasionally enjoy an expresso or a cappuccino, but I rarely drink it in the morning, like virtually every one else I know. There are so many levels of denial in our War on (some) Drugs. Every one of us, wherever we live, can cruise downtown and find at least one neon sign, in large colorful letters, proclaiming "DRUGS".

Happy Turkey Day everyone! And don't forget to enjoy that tryptophan!

i break my caffeine addiction at least once a year. my trigger is when i get to the second pot. i quit until i no longer crave it. then i wait another 2 weeks. usually takes a month in all. then i'm back down to a cup in the morning, most mornings.

i do drink alcohol. however, i don't do it for the buzz, and try to stop before i get there, regretting it when i fail. i don't like the buzz, or the feeling of being less capable. also, like caffeine, i quit for extended periods, just to cleanse my system and break any dependencies. at this point i am down to about 2 glasses of wine a week.

There are people who can become addicted to pot. Not as frequent as other drugs but it exists. I smoked it for 25 years before I stopped. Daily and heavy. Wonder what that says? Lol

No caffeine addiction here, either. I drink one cup in the morning at work if I didn't get enough sleep the night before, but I hate even doing that. It would never occur to me to drink coffee on a weekend or vacation day. I can't stand the idea of "depending" on anything. And like Flash, I enjoy the occasional glass of wine, but never more than a glass, because I hate the buzzed feeling I get from the alcohol.

I'm not knocking those who enjoy the feeling of getting high on either pot or alcohol - obviously it's a very strong (almost universal, it appears) human instinct, and I seem to have been born without the gene that triggers it. Seems to me that if medical science could discover a way to permanently turn off at birth whatever it is that enables people to get high, or cause it to be a negative, as opposed to a pleasurable, experience, it would solve an awful lot of the world's problems. I'd be happy to offer myself up as a test subject.

Dan,

OK, we've identified two of us - I wonder who the third person is? And +1 on your "addicted to speed" comment!

i fall into the the category of those who just don't get it. that being said, i didn't want anybody to say "don't knock it 'till you've tried it", so i tried a lot. i did live in the 80's after all, and have worked in rock and roll for the last 20 plus years.

I never subscribed to the , IMO , idiotic " don't knock it till you've tried it " arguement for anything. ( sounds like an old Liberace persuasion tactic , LOL ..)
