An interesting colour
#41

IIRC, Kathy's interior is deviating classic gray/light gray. I may have a pic on my server somewhere. I just saw her car a week or so ago and remember commenting it was the same interior as my 93 coupe. We were discussing fabric and material since she had some left over from her upholsterer she offered to me.

Jay,
See my post that is two up. You have the slightly darker 94.5-95 marble gray where Kathy has the light gray.

I'll be calling you in a couple of weeks so we can start to plan the 10 get together.

rhude - you have to remember that, like any dealership, the dealer could install anything the customer wanted - a lot of things were installed that were not "standard" options too - i have now come across at least 2 dozen cars with one option or another that were installed by the dealer prior to delivery of the car, but either not on the option list or the stickers for the car - i can't even begin to imagine how many are like that

it's not at all uncommon either - we've done that with the last 2 cars we've bought - we had things installed by the dealer, prior to us taking delivery, some that the dealership doesn't even sell - they will all do whatever it takes to sell the car - it has always been that way - porsche even makes a big deal about that - they will quickly tell you that you can "order anything you want" - it has even been in their advertising - it was up to the individual dealer whether or not to order it from the factory, or to have it done locally, or do it himself

with the 968, especially toward the end, when they were slashing prices and couldn't sell them, people saw the limited option packages that the factory delivered to the dealer, and that there was no chance of getting what they wanted easily, so they just had the things they wanted added of changed - but the factory paperwork doesn't show it

as an example, lsd was a thing installed in quite a few cars that did not have it when they arrived at the dealership - i've found a few now that the original owner had it installed prior to taking delivery - so were the bigger stereo systems, full power seats, and 17" wheels - i've even talked to a few who didn't order that stuff, but the dealer had put it in the car, having removed it from another car - they swapped stuff all the time - all kinds of stuff goes on at dealerships - unless you can talk directly to the point source, there is really no telling what your car "came with" or didn't at this point

6 years ago i passed up on a black cab (it was a tip) that had a black/white deviating interior with black pinstriping and porsche crests - it belonged to a used car dealer's mother, who was the original owner, and told the dealer to do that when she bought the car - pretty sure that color option was not on the list, yet that was how it was delivered - the guy was really trying to sell me the car, and made a big deal about the custom seats and stuff, and showed me the paperwork - no chance i wanted the car, but it was interesting

so, it is quite possible to see almost anything - running around the country to these different events, and seeing how many original owners, or owners with complete histories there are has been enlightening in how, in many cases, it has illustrated that the factory documentation is incomplete in telling the tale of the car, what it came with, or what was possible

True, but the bulk of the cars are in their original factory configuration. I say that based on all the work I have done on the registry over the past 13 years. Still there are 968s out there with LT1s installed in them and lambo doors.

of course i am not counting what people have done after they took delivery

i am only talking about how many things were done BEFORE delivery, some at the customer's direction and some at the dealer's, that are not on the stickers or factory paperwork - i am finding more and more cars like that the more events i go to

unless you speak directly to each owner, and determine how they received the car, you have no way of knowing how it was sold - the stickers only tell part of the story of a number of cars

that database shows what the factory did, but not what the dealers did after that

so, it would not surprise me at this point to see anything, and have it be "original"

True,
But can you say for sure that there wasn't one 968 sold new where the customer requested a LT1 V8 installed by that dealer. However unlikely, it is possible, remember, you keep saying "whatever the customer wanted". I'll stick with the factory configuration data. When the car was on the boat, that is the way it looked.

no - can't say that - certainly it was possible - i've seen all sorts of things that aren't on the factory paperwork - that is my point - worrying about what the factory paperwork said is moot - you need to get to the original buyer to really know what the car came with

for example, i can say that about 1 out of 100 cars got at least partially repainted (mine is one), without any notification to the buyer, so those cars were not delivered the way they were on the boat either - there is no paperwork on it either - they didn't have to - things happened en route - things got changed when the cars got there too - not everything is on the factory paperwork

but that does not mean anything - some of these cars are the more interesting ones of all

Agreed, I hate the undisclosed damage. My parents went to NJ to purchase a new Fiat spider once back in 1980. We drove all the way there and the dealer says "there were a few scrtaches so we decided to repaint the entire car". i told them we wanted a factory paint job and no longer wanted it. The salesman could not understand that. We left it.

yup - happens all the time - while it probably would not have changed my decision, it would have been nice to know, and would have affected how i handled a couple of repairs

some stuff you don't find out until years later too - my paint is a good example

so are the wheels on one guy's car, which per the sticker originally were to be 993 cup, but he wanted C2 Turbo - the dealer swapped them out but what he got delivered on the car were C2 Turbo replicas - he is the original owner of the car, but didn't find this out for over 10 years

this is not uncommon - in speaking with dealers, they have a lot of latitude with what they can do to sell a car - they raped and pillaged and did everything they could to get these things off the lot, especially in the last years - how it shipped can vary wildly from how it was sold - i am finding more and more cars where this is the case - it is a testament to how much service a dealership can provide though, and tells a real story of what went on then

cars like ours, which did not have a good sales record, fall into this pattern all the time - we see it now too with the crisis the auto market is in

this is one of the reasons it will likely not become a collectable car in the sense that others would - there are far too many variables to ever be able to establish any competitive standard of authenticity (outside the PCA "nazis" who refuse to accept that porsche did not always know what it was doing) - these were hand built cars, derived from a parts bin of previous cars, and anybody who has been under them can tell you that there are plenty of them that are "different" for no apparent reason

there will be a cult following, but i seriously doubt it will ever achieve "collectable" status (as determined by the accepted definition of the current value exceeding the original value) - clean examples will likely go up in value, but it won't have much to do with the way the factory shipped the car - it will be more about what shape the car is in

but as i said, it is those cars that don't fit the mold, and have odd inexplicable variables, and stand out from the crowd, that will be the first ones to gain value, whenever that time comes - that's just the way the collector car market goes - it's not just a 968 thing
