always a " new study "...
#1

I can't remember which comedian said ( I paraphrase )  if you are worried about the results of any study, simply wait a month until a new study comes out with the diametrically opposite conclusion .

So the latest one ( Duke University research, I believe ..) claims that even SECOND HAND smoke exposure will impact the mother to a degree where her baby's brain development and physical growth will be impaired not just if exposed to smoke during pregnancy but the damage is there and stays in the system BEFORE CONCEPTION causing subsequent problems  !

This study's conclusion would be hilarious, if it wasn't so ridiculous.

Hell, if even DIRECT, and chain-smoking at that, would adversely affect babies' brains development, or cause birth defects we would have not just millions, but BILLIONS and generation after generation of morons with various physical ailments, running all around cigarette-friendly Europe, China, Japan, all of east and south east Asia for that matter, India, the Middle East, Africa,  Central and South America, and much of the baby boomers segment in the U.S. and Canada to boot.  Anyone who's been to Greece or Turkey would attest to the overwhelming majority of women there chain smoking like there's no tomorrow; how stupid of those folks relying on thousands of years of history proving otherwise, instead of listening to these clever studies . :glare:

Mind you not implying cigarettes do not impact a smokers' health,...but this ?!   Come on...

Wait just a minute. I know you live in rarified air but really. If you are unable to see that at least the US is full of morons and people with all sorts of medical issues that once were either not diagnosed or not there then well. Everyone seems to have something wrong with them that someone or the govt should pay for. Look at the explosion of people who obtain social security disability. Look at all the people on welfare. Perhaps it is just our educational system but I think morons are like rabbits and they will eventually overrun and ruin what's left of our country!

Hey, don't react like that!  These are published on the Internet, they must be true.  Huh

Coffee was bad for us then it became good for us, then bad again, then good again. Exactly the same conclusions with wine . Then even hard alcohol ; in moderation, it supposedly has health benefits. But those examples are tame by comparison to some of the numerous other elements and factors of daily life which are studied for their effect on health, and you can't help but shake your head at some of the results , wondering who the hell funds all these useless studies ?

RAP, it's a proven fact ( simply look it up on the internet for validation, just as Roland pointed out ) that ALL residents of this state are " enlightened " , we're the illuminati of the U.S. You too, and any one for that matter can become a member of this exclusive intellectually superior community, simply by vacationing here ; it's another proven fact that an exposure as brief as two weeks will give you super brain powers and when ( if ) you return to your own state , you'll be the proverbial big fish in a little pond. And the bonus is that while visiting here , going to Napa or Paso Robles for a " moderate " amount of wine tasting will also afford you the many health benefits noted above . Win-win !

This just in : new conclusion from the RNC's latest study on global warming : the rising ocean levels is a good thing for sea life ; the fish will have a much higher roof ( practically " cathedral ceiling " luxury ) . Upward mobility, baby !

My favorite example of Kuhnian paradigm revolution has been (and remains) nutrition. Not every month or every week, but every DAY a new diet comes out to revolutionize weight loss, and all of these diets are supported and validated by academics and practitioners selling books. It used to be that books contained "better" knowledge than the internet because of the cost to produce them. Now that desktop publishing has emerged as a realistic option, books can be as wingnutty as the internet.

I still believe that Abe Lincoln said it most succinctly when he blogged "don't believe everything you read on the internet".

Yup, completely agree !

What I thought was hilarious ( while on the subject of diets and newly discovered solutions to weight problems ) is a commercial for some kind of balloons which you ingest - a new non-surgical method - which last for about six months , and give you a filled sensation so you supposedly eat less. The funny part was the end of the ad which said : clinical surdoes have shown that marginally obese individuals who use this device, WHEN COBINED WITH THE ASSOCIATED DIET AND EXERCISE REGIME, have lost anywhere from 30 lbs to as much as 100 lbs. Uhh, if I was able to stick to a diet and exercise routine, why TF would I need to put balloons in my stomach ?

Dan then perhaps I will just stay at your house for a while to achieve this altered state of enlightenment. I'm figuring more is better. Sort of like what we spend on our cars!

Lol, I keep telling myself that more spending on our cars is for the better , and if I do that often enough I may even start believeimg it .

And if you do stay over our place ( very unlikely since my parasite son commandeered a few rooms, one which has more electronics in it than NORAD center , not to mention the cat who'll take priority over any given humans and who has another room and the garage all to himself , so there's not much room left place for you to sleep ) don't expect any of the following California essentials : purple magic power crystals , hemp everything , sustainable, organic and vegan foods, " namaste' " inspirational posters, siurf boards, Enya and similar new age music playing on the background, or ANY electric cars ! . Just sayin' ..
