All Wheel Drive 968?
#1

I was reading thru some older posts and came across mention of the Porsche 959, my 3rd love in life, the 968 being second and well.......anyway.

Just out of curiosity, has anybody tired to add/do all-wheel drive? Is there room, do such components even exist without throwing some asian parts into the mix. Did Porsche ever attempt as part of the Rally program? Is there a power to weight ratio issue?

Flash, kinda got you figured on one topic, you'd never allow the extra weight! lol

But look at the success of the Subaru's, Audi, and of course Porsche with Rally's.

I mean this car already handles like its on rails (well a lot do, just not mine yet!), imagine what it might be like with all wheel drive.

although my daily driver is AWD, i have never been a fan of AWD on a sports car. It adds weight and robs WHP.

Yep, power to weight would be a concern. The gain in handling vs. the loss of acceleration may not be a worthy trade-off .

i still wonder if it was worth it in the denali - i have yet to run into a situation where front drive traction was a concern, but admittedly i can't really tell how much the front is pulling either - i may hate a 2WD version

but the extra tow capacity and the increased fuel economy of a 2WD version still makes me wonder

I'll never openly admit it publicly but... my wife used to drive a 97 Subaru Outback. On that rare occasion that it actually iced here in Dallas I decided to drive it to work instead of the truck. Wow! I have always owned 4x4 trucks but this was different, you always hear about how good they handle in bad weather but this was fantastic. Then I took it out on a dry day and just squirreled off in it, it really handled well. It was no sprts car but it sure was fun to knock around. It died shortly after that. I know nothing LOL

I love watching the rally racing when I catch it, and know Porsche was into it, probably with Audi underpinnings, just though I'd throw the question out there.

well...i guess if you have enough power, the added weight does not matter much....

Well, I suppose xrad could pull this conversion off using leftover parts from previous feats of automotive alchemy he has performed , for for mere mortals, it would probably cost about as much as a new 997 Carrera 4 to convert a 968 to AWD.

Porsches first rally cars were not 4WD, but just rear drive. These cars were raised 911s as I recall.

You can go faster in a AWD ... until everything goes 'tits up'

Indeed the rally cars not - but Porsche's first car ever build was a 4-weel drive

On Topic: why would you want to make an AWB 968 ... drive-ability of the 968 is very good compared with other sportcars (even the AWD's)

Ok I started the thread with "I do not want to do this" LOL

I was just thinking out loud "I wonder if some had tried this?". I based it on Porsche having several AWD drive cars and their involvement in Rally.

Someone also pointed out that they used 2WD as well. I did not know that that thank you.

There have been several odd-ball, one-off, cars produced and thought it might make for interesting conversation if anybody knew of one out there.

I live in Texas, no lie there is a 76 Corvette 4X4, lifted about 5'! Yes is looks as bad as it sounds, actually worse!

I am a purist at heart when it comes to Porsche and walk a fine fine line on what I would do and what I absolutely would not do. But id it makes it go faster, stop shorter, handle better, well then........
LOL
