[968Syncro]

Ok, so we went shopping for a car for my daughter, graduating next summer, we wanted to do some early research. The target is a 4-6 year old Corolla, Jetta, equivalent Nissan, Hyundai, Civic, Mazda 3, etc. Requirements: 4-door sedan, no frills, emphasis on reliability, utility, resilience, no flaws. Needs to be solid transportation for 1-2 years.



We went to Carmax today, I think for many people they have a good business model and offer good value. Sure it may cost a bit more than the private market, but they have selection, a bit of warranty, easy purchase, some peace of mind, and I believe they really only put worthy cars on the lot. She'll buy the car in Boston, so it is very difficult for me to participate.



A lead candidate was a 2007 Toyota Corolla, 74K miles, no extras for $11,900. Same with "ancient" Honda Civics. What!!!!! I can get a 968 for that!. This is nuts, how does a 7 year old Corolla compare to a 968. I was offended, took my sledge hammer out and destroyed several windshields in their lot. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/whine.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> She has driven my 968 for years, likes it, but would prefer the Corolla!!!!!!!!!!!! -------- Houston ... I can't believe how many people are missing the joy of the 968, I have a gut econo-meter, have seen it in some data like 944 prices, I think 968s are going up in price! Please keep / save your 968 or you may be sentenced to a 7 year old Corolla!

We just bought a 2011 scion for my future son in law. He paid 12 for it. I forget the mileage but it was reasonable and the car was in very good shape. Civics are hard to find and pricey! Seems like you might be missing something here. We did not use carmax but rather a local used car dealer that we had done business with for years. Patience is a virtue. Buy a car out there and ship it to her. I just had one shipped from Ca. This way you miss all the salt and rust. For a seven year old car this might be an important point.

Lol, my wife doesn't like the 968 either, must be a female thing. The comfort level is the key factor I assume. And the fact that I will kill her if she wrecks it.



Buy a VW, less boring than a Toyota, as reliable and they keep their value better, at least in Europe that is.

Try Auto Tempest to search all the craigslist ads within your area. Saves time and sometimes you can find a deal. That's how I found my 968.

carmax is a pretty safe bet. big company. standard procedures. decent customer service. reasonable pricing. you can find cheaper cars, but then you run risks. it's not always about the price.



as for the 968, with parts availability falling, prices plummeting, and more and more owners neglecting their cars because they got in on the low side, expected it to run, and can't afford to fix them, i predict the numbers falling fast. i expect to see 50 cars a years going to the wreckers. sad if you look at it from sheer numbers, but the silver lining is that ultimately it makes those remaining all that more rare, which eventually will result in increased value.

Inexplicably, the Corolla is the most overpriced used car out there ( talking about cars of which there are millions, and millions around. If you're looking for Japanese reliability, for a couple of thousand more than you'd pay for that six or seven year, 75 k mile Corolla you can pick up a brand new Nissan. Both reliable, and both boring. But one is new :-).



However, I would also chose a VW as an alternative to a Toyota any day.
