968 sequence numbering
#1

I'm kinda' new to the 968 party so please bear with my ignorance. My car's last 6 digits are 820199. Where does it fall in the production run? How does a person decipher the VIN, bit by bit. Thanks! Dan

I can tell you but I need the two letters in front of the VIN. Either NS, PS, RS, or SS.

So, If I understand all of this correctly, my VIN of WPOAA2960PS820632 ('93 coupe) means the following:

WPO - World code indicating it is made by Porsche

AA2 - VDS indicating it was destined for the US

96 - First two digits of the model number

0 - Test digit

P - Made in 1993

S - Manufactured in Stuttgart

8 - Last digit of the model number

2 - Code for body and engine?

0632 - Serial number (632nd produced that year?)

Nope, not that simple. Porsche held the first 60 VINs back for each model year in each series. The first coupe sold in each year is 820061, first cab is 840061. If his car is a 92 (NS) then he has the 139th coupe sold in the US market.

PCNA produced 608 coupes for 1993 Model year. The VIN range is PS820061 - PS820668. That would make your car #572 for the 93s.

Got it! Thanks! So how would one go about figuring out exactly when their car was made (i.e, month, day)?

The production month and date can be found on the upper right hand corner of the VIN sticker of your driver's door jam.

I've seen those numbers before and they are wrong, at least for the NA 968s. Morgan has them published in his book as well. Again, they reflect the sales of the first 60 VINs for each year and model and those cars were never sold. I have offical sales documentation from PCNA which balance with the numbers minus 480 cars. The registry supports this as well. i have almost 700 cabs registered over 7 years and have yet to find one with a VIN less then 61. I say 2008 North American 968 cabs sold and 2234 968 coupes during the production run.

could be semantics - "produced" versus "sold" - we know that number of chassis were produced that were never sold - we've seen pics of some of them - probably not all 60 each year though

lol - but that would make this car even more rare than what everyone thought

that's cool, right?

Wow, thanks to everyone for all the info and insight. I have been out of the loop for a few weeks but after reading all the replies, I realize I should have included my VIN in the original thread. It is:

WP0AA2960SS820199

It's a Black/Cashmere coupe. Stone stock, no mods. Bought it from the second owner (a doctor from Miami) a few years ago and shipped in a container over to Bremerhaven where I picked it up and drove it home to Wuerzburg.

So if the production run went to 258 in 1995 (968 US/Canada WPOAA296_SS820001-0258), that would make my car pretty close to the end. Khewl.

Thanks again for all the great info everyone!!!

For 1992 did RoW include Canada? Was looking through this and realized that my VIN is: WP0CA2965NS840364...if I follow that isn't a US VIN?

Dan,

That 258 number is wrong. The last car is actually 319 and production is 259.

As for your car:

It is the 139th 1995 coupe of 259 produced for the north american market

It is the 2114th of 2334 coupes produced for the north american market

Jeff

Canada was grouped with the North american (US) numbers. Your VIN is a US VIN.
