968 ITB's -- again
#1

I have a customer wanting me to make up a racing ITB intake system for an all out roadrace application.

But the base manifolding could be used for a streetable/track day intake system.

Cost for a streetable system "approx" $2500.oo .

Now this system will not work with the stock ECU and Maf sensor,

and might need mods to the power brake booster for clearance to the airhorns.

Any interest in a intake system that will have real power potential.

I am not sure to understand very well; don't you have already developed an ITB for the 944S/968 ?

Anyway, what is the expected gain ?

having just picked up a 2005 M3, i can attest to the effectiveness of the ITB setup (got 6 of them on that thing) - boy howdy it goes - definitely would like to see something like this on a race car

so, the "system" would have to have an additional new brain and programming for it? doesn't that make the cost projections look like about 6-7 grand, plus programming and tuning?

any chance of having you develop the entire package? this is more of a "plug and play" audience, and that would go a long way toward marketability

if not, pete has been wanting to do this - perhaps you should partner up with him to develop the entire package

From my time on vwvortex I came to know ITB to stand for something else........ no wait I'm thinking of IDB.

Looks good and I'm interested to see where this goes.

I've spoken with Pete and we might be work on something in the future.

But for Pete to justify this type of intake system he needs customers that want it.

As for developing a package system, I don't own a 968 and don't wish to sell electronics, ECU's etc.

I do cylinderheads and intake systems and have enough work doing those.

The lead picture on my website is a lost leader, works good for a lead page.

Just some parts I was playing with many years ago.

The intake system,

I am thinking about could be configured to work with the 944 4V 2.5 litre as well,

with reduced internal port cores, which would open up a larger market place for the intake system.

If your wondering if my manifolds work or not.

The NOPI 2007 dragrace class winners,

the Clutchmasters team use my manifolds to run 9.5 sec at 142+ mph.

I realize thats it's dragracing,

but you find hp where you find it.

Their Honda 2600 cc engines are making way over 400hp at the wheels normally aspired.

Another example:

S2000 Honda with my ITB system with correct cams and exhaust, -- 75hp increase.

From approx 200 hp stock to 275 and not all top end power, mostly mid range power.

I'll vouch for the S2000 ITB setup, it was very nice.

The port shapes are different between the 2.5ltr 944 and 3ltr 968.

He is thinking the 2.5 16 valve 944S. A very small market indeed. Their head is the same as an S2 for the most part. Different cam profile though.

i'm certainly not saying that the stuff won't work - sure, i wonder if it will make more than the 12hp the dual resonant manifold currently does all by itself, but if other engines are a gauge, it is definitely possible, if you change everything else to match

i just don't see anybody else stepping up to develop the electronics and other list of things required to make it work - it is a "system" when it is complete - unfortunately, until then, it would just be a manifold that sits on a shelf waiting for somebody to figure out how to make it work

i have a similar situation with the supercharger project - the unit exists - the "system" still needs development - it needs to be complete, plug and play, and legal in 09 - that means i get to spend a LOT of money working it out, because nobody else wants to - it's a business investment to be sure - maybe it works out - maybe it just costs me a lot of money - but, until i have one, and can prove what it does, it goes nowhere in the market

that's why i thought pete would be a good choice if you weren't interested in developing the rest of the system - he has said he wanted to do this, and has extensive experience in working out software on the oem ecu - i think you really need to finish the project, one way or another, in order to be able to get anybody to buy it

best of luck, and be sure to let me know when it works, because i am very likely going to be up front in the line to get one

bob, keep in mind that the big gains with itbs aren't always in pure hp numbers, but often in huge differences in throttle response. Something that our cars could most certainly benefit from.

Lots of discussion for future development. I will certianly go stand alone ignition soon which would make the ITB development happen sooner.

Lance and I have had discussions for 2 years or so.

There may be other options in the works.

These just ended on the auction site recently.

Not much of a discription, but 9M must have really put some work into them to have thier logo cat into the runner.

They (9M) spent a lot of money to have Jenvey make up the patterns for those manifolds.

But in my opinion, (the manifolds and throttles) are sized to small for a large 3.0 litre 4 cylinder engine.

With a manifold of that length the throttles would have to be larger to have a system with the right taper out to open air.

EX: my Acura RSX system uses 52m/m throttles and thats with a shorter length manifold then the 9M 968.

If you guys want something,

give Pete at RSBarn a call and tell him what you want.
